Madagascar's very first and only Hostel located in the heart of Antananarivo. Super cool and comfortable accommodation at an unbeatable price. We can hook you up, advise, and get you to all the best spots around Mada, the fastest and most stylish ways possible. At Madagascar Underground we offer 3 super epic dorms and one private room, with shared shower and toilet blocks, and one cool as private room with ensuite. We have other awesomeness around the place like a bar, Mexican restaurant, games room, library, cinema, gardens to chill and much more. We love surfing, cave diving, reef diving, trekking, kite surfing, and Madagascar's unreal fauna and flora. And although there aint too much of that in Tana, we know where it is everywhere else around the country! Our aim is to get you to these places, and other places you desire, hooking you up with other travellers with common interests to make your stay cheaper, more comfortable, and generally more enjoyable, and of course unforgettable. Even if your not staying with us, come have one of our tasty margaritas, and enjoy the coastal feel in the centre of Madagascar. We are located in the coolest suburb of Antananarivo, right in the centre of the city, next the old american embassy. Easy walking distance to all the best bars, restaurants and shops. Its a nice and quiet street with parking and no traffic...which means no pollution. Come and say G'day :D
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The rooms are like little beach huts and the beds are very comfy. It has a great social vibe and is equipped with a foosball and pool table. The food is delicious as well. The staff are exceptional and helped us arrange a driver to show us around the country. Overall it was a lovely stay and I'm definitely coming back!

We were here on our honeymoon and the hospitality was second to none! It's beautiful and really peaceful which was very refreshing. We also really enjoyed the food. We walked/pirogued to the nearby fishing village and it's worth a visit to meet the local people. PS. Thank you for our honeymoon gifts!

Built by travelers for travelers, the Lemur Hostel Antananarivo is located in Antananarivo's city centre offering international-standard and affordable accommodation for people who are young (at heart). The home ground for people who are passionate about travel, Lemur Hostel is where you get to meet travelers from around the world, chill, exchange stories, and have the experience of a lifetime.
I stayed @ Lemur Hostel for 2 weeks when I arrived in Antananarivo before moving to my flat. The staff is a whole family dedicated to your well being, nice, attentive to your needs and with good advice. The WIFI is particularly good, which enabled me to work from there without any difficulty. The dormitories are basic, for less than $10 a night, it's definitely worth it! The hostel is well located, easy to access several parts of the city. It's also secured, the gate is constantly closed. There's a shared kitchen in which you can cook your own food, as there's no half board: only a free breakfast is provided. Very nice stay overall, ideal for small budgets. Enjoy!

It’s a lovely initiative that you staying at the hotel send children to school. According to earlier comments it used to be a good place, but not anymore. We were not welcomed but just given a key, when there was a problem with the room almost impossible to change, no hot water, no toilet paper, mosquito net too small not fitting the bed. No one there to address your problems or in case of an emergency. We called our travel agency and the manager who promised to solve the problems but not much happened. Sorry to say but best be avoided.

My group visited during the rainy season to observe the wildlife on the island. We all trekked up to the Akiba eco-gite along a scenic pathway that gave us breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean along the way. Once we arrived, we were greeted by a staff member with freshly made juices from fruit trees grown on the property. Some of us relaxed in the hammocks outside of the bunkhouse, others made broken conversations with the children in the nearest village on their way to school, and a few people broke off the explore the trail that was teeming with wildlife. The meals we were served were home-cooked on an open fire. After spending nearly a month traveling around Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, these meals were the best of the whole trip. It was also a relief to have as much fresh, clean and safe water as we could drink, which is not so common in the country. The estate is supplied with clean water from a spring, and I honestly miss it now that I'm home. Another relief was the lack of mosquitoes. There are still a small population, but they are not aggressive, and do not leave itchy marks on your skin. At night we slept in the bunkhouse with the door wide open. Because we visited in the rainy season, we got the privilege of listening to the passing thunderstorms. Staying at the Akiba eco-gite was a truly unique and immersive experience.

Une adresse immanquable à Nosy be.

Dinner at Rianala Gite was one of the best meals I've had in Madagascar. Even if you don’t stay there overnight, please do yourself a favour and stop by for food. Young lady preparing your meal is a real master of culinary arts! My friend and I had a pleasure of eating there in September and we were lucky to do so. It was not a busy period when we stayed, and as we were the only guests at the time, not everything from the menu was available. But it made no difference. I would happily eat everything this lady cooks! Chicken stock with ginger shavings and generous pieces of chicken in it was simply divine and so was the pork dish. It is a modest place, not a fine dining, but if you want to try Malagasy home made food, I cannot recommend it more. I believe you can book a table in advance so make sure you’ll treat yourself to gorgeous meal on a budget after visiting the park. Thinking back, I enjoyed my dinner there more than at some expensive restaurants in Tana. Accommodation is very simple and not for everyone as it is hostel-style. Dorm rooms only, very clean. Bathrooms don't have showers but hot water was provided upon request. Great location right by the park entrance and true Malagasy hospitality.

The Olive Branch (previously Chez LuLu) is a new and up and coming hostel located in Antsirabe. The establishment was a collaboration between Peace Corps Volunteers and the business owners. The Olive Branch offers a comfortable place away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to walk to destinations. It's truly a hidden gem in Madagascar.
I love staying at Chez LuLu, it is my go-to whenever I am in Antsirabe. It is wonderful for a budget traveler especially when you never know how many people you will be traveling with. It is like a hostel, so rooms and facilities are shared, but the bathrooms are clean, there are two showers with hot water, free (fast!) wifi, and the owners are some of the most warm and welcoming people you will ever meet. There is no alcohol consumption allowed, but you have plenty of options of places nearby for both food and drink (I suggest Chez Dom down the road, excellent selection and bleu cheeseburgers!) and because it is off the main strip the place is very peaceful and you can get a good night's sleep.

The worst hotel experience in my life. They literally invented stories to steal our money. For instance, I forgot that in the evening the main door was locked and I pulled it. I mean, I was sober and I normally pulled it. And it just opened. It was a cheap sliding door not even good for a shower box. That's what protects you from Antananarivo streets. In the morning a local lady from the staff was telling the police(!!!) many false stories like that I forced the door (I still think it was unlocked, but for sure I didn't force it) and I insulted the staff. The French husband of the owner was shouting around and behaving like a child. Unbelievable. They asked me a ridiculous amount of money, really a lot. Few times more than the real price of the door (Vaza price). And I had to pay also for the supposed bad words I said to the staff lady: I swear that never happened.I would have never paid but I had a flight in the afternoon and the police didn't let me go. In Europe I would have definitely sued them. Greedy liars, especially the European owners. And they knew what they were doing because after having paid I told them they were stealing me money and they said they were sorry for that. I have never felt so abused. I could have also paid something the door, even if I think that a normal main door shouldn't get opened by hand by mistake. But I can't pay 5 times more with all that shouting and lies and police and hysteria. I can't believe what happened. Crazy greedy people, you can't imagine it. A last word again for the French husband of the owner: a greedy and extremely annoying person that can't handle an adult conversation. Please don't go there.
