Top 10 Hostels hotel in Alaska, United States

April 18, 2023 Jeremy Dunfee

Alaska is divided into five regions: far north, interior, southwest, south central, and inside passage. Although it takes a long time to see the entire state, you can travel through the regions by boat, car, bus, or plane. Hike through the mountains, or venture out on a deep sea fishing or whale watching excursion. Get in touch with nature by camping in the wilderness, or experience your preferred degree of class and luxury in the beautiful, active cities of Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Perfect place to stay in Seward

Reviewed By Passport623929

My friends and I had an awesome stay at one of the yurts at the Nauti Otter. The yurt village was so fun and it was great to have an outdoor hostel environment here in the US where we were able to meet new people and chat with other travelers around the fire at night or while making waffles in the morning. The beds are super comfy and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook full dinners when we wanted to. Heather and Clint were really responsive with any questions and provided great recs for things to do in and around Seward. Bathrooms were cleaned everyday and guests seemed to take good care of the kitchen and clean up after themselves as well. The location is perfect, near downtown Seward and a number of great trailheads (Lost Lake, Tonsina Point, Exit Glacier, etc.). We loved that the yurt village was a little ways off the Seward Highway and secluded but still near everything, and it was a perfect home base for us all week. I would definitely stay here again!!

Amazing place, environment, and people

recently stayed here for two nights, and will make every effort to stay again the next time we re in Alaska. The entire staff is amazing, rooms are comfy, kitchen/bathrooms are clean, and they really do everything to make your stay great. We were lucky to meet a bunch of cool people, sit at the fire and look for the northern lights, have some laughs with everyone, and get tips about the area. Sven really knows how to run a place and make it a great time. Perfect hostel experience and a great price. Glad to have found it. If you re looking for a hostel environment while still being extremely comfortable, this is the place for you.

Great hostel

Reviewed By Sbanarer

We are a family of 6 and rented out the room with 3 bunkbeds. Accommodations are expensive in this area, but we felt we got great value for our money at this hostel. Room was clean, good wifi, area was pretty and quiet. Great common area with kitchen and seating. Not very far from Anchorage, close to Whittier and Portage. Ashley was very responsive and accommodating. Only complaint was that we needed to separately contact staff to request/pay for towels.

The hostel was centrally located with easy access to downtown sites. The volunteers that run it couldn't have been friendlier. We stayed in the mixed gender room and met some very interesting people. Everyone was very considerate. We cooked our meals in the kitchen and were able to do our laundry.

Last Minute Cancelation

Could n't rate zero, Pls dont make reverservation unless you are ready to accommodate last minute "cancellation" from the hostel. I made a reservation via airbnb on May 23rd for the July 4th (Independence Day) holiday. Susanne(Manager) I guess, canceled my reservation stating "we did not have it on file otherwise. We just found it while we were verifying all the reservations for the next month". She canceled my trip a week before. This hotel took two months to verify my trip? It is really tought to get a last minute reservation in anchorage. They ruined my trip. When I try to reach out to them via Airbnb ,NO reply from the hotel. Please avoid this hotel to avoid last surprises

Cozy Vintage, Friendly People

Reviewed By Peg A

The check in was easy. I called in advance, and there was a board by the front door with my name and bed location. Liz showed me around, and was super friendly. A second blanket was available on request, along with an additional pillow. Liz knows the area well, and offered lots of advice on food, hikes and even had a coupon for me! Coffee and tea were available, and the kitchen was well stocked. The Hostel was pretty busy while I was visiting, and there was often someone in the kitchen cleaning, or sweeping floors, and keeping all in order. There is 1 inside bathroom, and 2 bathrooms accessible via the back porch. All of these were well maintained, and had showers, so there was never a wait. There is a nice living room for hanging out, and a back porch with tables and seating also. It's a vintage home with an area map painted on the kitchen wall by Liz. I'll return.

Best way to get the real Ketchikan experience

Reviewed By jnfour

Single female traveler in late 20s. I spent my 3 nights in Ketchikan at EagleView Hostel, and could not have found a better place. Dale is a charming host who goes out of his way to welcome guests to his home that he built himself. The first night I arrived Dale and another few guests (some from the Race to Alaska) and I stayed up to midnight chatting. Dale invited me to share his delicious salmon dinner the next evening (fish caught by his neighbor), then drove 4 of us to a free Native American dance and joined us out for a drink at the Fish Hut. The third night he drove some other guests to a local play. He advised me on trail running routes, lent me some bear spray, and made me promise to call when I got off the mountain to let him know I was down safe. I like to think I'm capable of taking care of myself, but it’s nice to have someone looking out for you in a grandfatherly way. The place is clean (some posts say otherwise, but I think they date back to years ago when Dale was working full time) and full of curios Dale has picked up on his travels over the years. Staying here is to immerse yourself properly in Ketchikan lifestyle and, in some ways, in a bygone time; it’s a place where people can still have long conversations rather than staring at their phones. It feels very safe, and there were no lockout hours – which was very convenient when it was so rainy! The downstairs is divided between a separate apartment that is rented out to folks working in Ketchikan for the summer, and the guys’ dorm. The girls’ dorm and the room for couples are upstairs. You can store food in the fridge and cupboards, and use Dale’s kitchen. The views from the living room are spectacular. If you are an aviation geek you can listen in on Dale’s radio to the comms of the seaplane pilots as you watch them takeoff and land. Some other posts mention rules – they are all obvious things that take no effort and that any good house guest/roommate would do anyway. E.g. leave your outdoor shoes at the door, don’t take long showers that use up all the hot water, wash your dishes right away, use the bedsheets properly to avoid making the comforters and mattresses dirty, etc. As for the hill part, it’s only 5 blocks up the hill from Safeway (on the flat), and you can always take the Green Loop bus that stops just above the hill from the hostel if you don’t want to walk. Also, it’s still only $28/night, a rate which apparently hasn’t changed in 14 years. For comparison, the airport ferry fare has gone up 50% in that time.

The lodge burned to the ground last winter. Shame - a small piece of Alaskan history gone forever now. The views on a clear day were amazing too. Was a great place to stop in after snow machining. It’s unlikely that it will be rebuilt at this point.

Great place to stay

This place has basic rooms that were everything we needed after a day or days exploring the McCarthy area and just needing to crash. Breakfast was included and was delicious in the bar/restaurant next door. We felt like we were in a western movie with the accomodations, the town, the characters, the dogs. If you like adventure you will love this place. Many advenures to explore due to the St Elias guides and the small single airplanes to fly you over the glaciers. Both have local offices to pick the adventure you want. Loved this part of our Alaska trip and will return. Highly recommend.
