Top 10 Horseback Riding Tours in South Dakota, United States

August 7, 2021 Trinity Boughner

South Dakota has good golf courses, skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, hiking, and biking among rolling prairies, pine forests, and granite mountain peaks like Mount Rushmore. Glacial lakes and Missouri River reservoir lakes provide great fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing, and windsurfing. The whole family will enjoy this prairie land where grain growing begat roadside attractions like the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Everything made from corn, even the popcorn, tastes better here. Where buffalo roam, roadside diners serve up buffalo and luscious homemade fruit pies. Shop for good deals on cowboy boots on the same Black Hills and Badland Main Streets where cowboys and cowgirls outfit themselves. Be near the eroded buttes, spires, and prairie grasslands of Badlands National Park in Lead, Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Hill City, Custer, and other nearby towns. The whole family will enjoy watching for big game like bison, bighorn sheep, antelope, eagles, and hawks. Drive the one-hour Hwy 240 loop road, with a side-trip to Robert's Prairie Dog Town. Learn about the Oglala Sioux Tribe at the White River Visitor Center, which is near Wounded Knee. Tour the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site's Cold War nuclear silos, just outside the Park's boundaries. About 90 minutes west of Badlands National Park is Mount Rushmore. Lead, Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Hill City, Whitetail Springs, and Custer are also very near Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Jewel Cave National Monument. View Mount Rushmore from the aerial tramway in Keystone, which also houses the Borglum Historical Center celebrating the artist behind the sculpting of Rushmore. Take the kids to the Dinosaur Park in Rapid City. Attend Custer State Park’s Annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival. Bedazzle the whole family with sparkling calcite crystals in 151-mile long Jewel Cave. Bison, pronghorn, and elk graze the grasslands of Wind Cave National Park. Central South Dakota has the state capitol, Pierre, in addition to numerous lakes along the Missouri River. Go fishing and boating in the rivers and lakes. Take the kids to the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium in Pierre to see the state’s native fish. Drop by the Dacotah Prairie Museum along the James River in Aberdeen in the northeast to learn prairie history and natural history. Swing by Sioux Falls to see the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial and special exhibits at the Old Courthouse Museum. Choose from among 10 golf courses in Sioux Falls.

Sage Meadow Ranch

Reviewed By CrookedCreekGR

We visited Sage Meadow Ranch with a group of 6 ladies. We were thoroughly impressed from start to finish. A little advice- make sure you follow the directions on the website as you will most likely NOT have cell service on the way there. The directions are great and there are some very helpful signs along the way. Upon arriving, we were amazed at how gorgeous the ranch was! The yard was immaculate with gorgeous flowers and western decorations. The horse corrals were the cleanest I have ever seen- not a single horse apple to be seen (or smelled!). The horses themselves were very clean also. They were all laid-back, easy going horses. We took the 2 hour ride, and it was beautiful with varying terrain. Holly and Dave make you feel like family! Thanks Holly and Dave, hope you have a wonderful summer!

A 2 hour ride for the family was the highlight of our trip to SD! Mercy was a great guide, kept it interesting, and our 8 year remarked on the drive home "He really wanted to make sure we had a great time." The 125 acre property had lots of hidden gems, the horses were great and well cared for. Would definitely recommend to all riding experience levels, we had a decent amount of experience and wanted a different experience than the nose-to-tail rides, and this is it! Mercy checks out your ability, and you get some reasonable "freedom" while out on the ride (if you want). Attaching a few pictures to show how varied the terrain is. We highly recommend!!!!

T&M Trail Rides

Reviewed By pmzwi - Grand Forks, United States

What a great experience for my family and I. We are beginner horse riders (my wife and I, children ages 14, 11, and 6) and Tammy and Wyatt took great care of us. Tammy outfitted us and helped us on our horses (Mud, Molly, Sadie, Skylar, and Boomer). Wyatt led us on a two hour ride. The trails were not difficult to navigate. The sights along the trails were amazing. Wyatt was fantastic. He taught us about our horses, their personalities and how to handle each based on their traits. He gave us some insight to the area and shared a little about his life. We saw at least four deer during our ride with lots of birds, squirrels and rabbits along the way. Max the dog walked the whole trip. Helmuts are required for children under 12 and optional for everyone else. It was a great two hour ride and we'd recommend T&M Trail Rides to anyone.

Blue Bell Stables

Riding stable for adults and kids over age 4.

Reviewed By OrcasIslady - Deer Harbor, United States

The first thing I noticed was how clean the stables were-no offensive odor-although I love the smell of horses-and no flies to speak of. The black flies can get nasty. It may have been because we were there in mid June but the horses were not really bothered with them, even on the trail. The horses themselves were well trained and cared for. It was a very efficient operation with plenty of help around. We did the half day ride and our guides- Jordan and Bridget-were lovely young ladies who made the ride both interesting and fun. The trails meander through meadow and woods with small inclines and several water crossings. We came across 2 bull bison along the way. The horses handled all of it with ease. I used to ride the French Creek trails with my own horses many years ago so remember how beautiful it is and it did not disappoint this time either. I would highly recommend this stable if you are looking to experience Custer State Park on the back of a horse. No matter your experience level.
