Makumbusho MIKINDANI Museum

The Makumbusho MIKINDANI Museum’s subject is the history and culture of Tanzania’s southern coastal region. The Wamakonde, who along this region’s coastline assimilated Swahili ways of life, comprise the greater proportion of the present-day population. Their own history is at the heart of the museum. But other peoples – from Africa and from distant shores – have significantly influenced the development of the region. They too are part of the story.

We're visiting from Canada! Wow-what an extraordinary experience my husband and I had at the Village museum! We paid extra for the tour guide which was very beneficial. Our tour guide shared an immense history knowledge on the Tanzanian culture. It's a cute village setup they have, you get to see how the local Tanzanian's used to live before the civilization. We paid extra for the local dance by the awesome group, which was pretty cool! They did an epic job with the setup of the village.

An incredible history of the island. From the era of the Omani occupation, through the occupation by the Portuguese and then the British, upto the post-WW2 period. Fascinating history about an Omani princess and her relationship with a European high ranking personality, presumably an Austrian. Well worth a visit to view an amazing collection of paintings, artwork, photos and furniture. Advisable to visit with a guide or read up on it beforehand.
