The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

Visiting the Tolstoy Moscow home was a great experience. I found it quite easily. Travelling from near Red Square, I took the metro and it was only a few stops and then a short 10 minute walk or so. It felt like the house was very much as the Tolstoys left it, a comfortable, well lived-in family home. There's lots of memorabilia on display and much of the handicraft of Tolstoy's wife. I got the audio guide in English which was useful but there are good notices in English in the house if I recall. I could well imagine life in the house and the concerts the family used to have there. There is also quite a big garden. I later travelled to Tula and visited Yasnaya Polyana, the Tolstoy country estate, and felt there were real similarities in the homes. I also visited the Tolstoy Museum in Moscow which is about a 20 minute walk away and found that interesting but the home is definitely the place which well conveys a sense of Tolstoy's private and working life.
