Piran (Slovene pronunciation: [piˈɾáːn] ( listen); Italian: Pirano [piˈraːno]) is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town has much medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative centre of the local area and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but was replaced by Slovene as demographics shifted.

So we planned a stop in Trieste on our way from Venice to Split, Croatia. We knew a little. The city was the home of Chef Lydia Bastianich and many national flags flew there over the centuries. It turned to be a wonderful surprise. We found beautiful architecture, wide streets, reasonable prices, friendly people and even more complex history than we had imagined. Helping us sort through the centuries of politics, wars, occupations and developmnets was our guide Demian Sem. He was wonderful. Demien is a Slovenian (next door to Trieste) and explained how Slovenia, Venice, Italy, the Hapsburgs, Ottomans, Romans, Italian Fascists, NAZI's, WWII and others figured in the city's history. Demien punctuated his narrative with personal anecdotes and the local color you can only see with a native. He explained the more interesting architecture, buildings, their significance and their role in the city's history, economy and culture. He also has a great sense of humor and managed to entertain us on a personal level as well. We like to use local guides, especially on 1st visits. Damien not only met our expectations, he exceeded them on every criteria. If you book a local tour ask for Demian Sem. You will benefit from his extensive knowledge and interestig delivery.

We enjoyed the hidden secrets of Ljubljana tour with Primoz. He guided us to a number of hidden gems that we would not have noticed had we toured on our own. He is very knowledgeable about the city and was prepared with print material to better describe and explain certain aspects of the city, which was really helpful. His manner throughout our 2 hour tour was pleasant, considerate and full of fun and interesting facts. The time just flew. Especially appreciated, was the spectacular sunset that he orchestrated for our pleasure at the end of the tour on Butcher's Bridge ( with all the lover's locks ). Great way to end a very nice tour!! Thank you!!

We brought a group to Slovenia and had a very positive experience making arrangements with Mateja for almost 60 people to take part in a walking tour with stops for geocaching, and then a bus trip to a winery with a wine fountain and lunch. The arrangements that Mateja made for our group were fabulous, the information shared on the walking tour was very interesting and she made sure there was enough time for photos and souvenirs. The information shared by Mateja and her staff during the drive to the winery was very interesting. We were very impressed with the lunch menu that was chosen - it was a great local meal and was SO delicious. The wine fountain was quite amazing, we have never seen anything like this in North America. Our group had so much fun and the view was outstanding. Thank you!

I spent the day travelling around with my guide Michelle, and she made the whole experience something I will never forget. She took me to see many different sites from Lake Bohinj to Waterfall Savica to Lake Bled. However the main stops on the way were not all there was to see, it was as much about the journey as it was the destinations. Slovenia has some incredible sites to behold and the scenary all throughout the day left me blown away. Driving through the deepest vallies and up the tallest mountains, it was a real adventure the whole way. Due to the time of year and current events, we basically had every spot to ourselves without the hussle and bussle of noisy tourist spots and the benefit of this was how peaceful everything was. Michelle is an incredibly friendly and kind person, full of knowledge and experience of Slovenia that she shares with you in an enthusastic and engaging way, she is perfect company for the trip. This is an amazing day out which I highly reccomend to anyone visiting Slovenia. I will absolutely be coming back to stay at Lake Bohinj next year for a relaxing camping holiday. Thank you Michelle for touring me around Slovenia during my stay here. It has been one of the best ( or even, the best ) experience I have had travelling over the past few years.

We had an excellent tour with Marina as our guide for the Piran & Istrian Flavors tour. Istranka was easy to work with booking our tour and responded promptly. We were picked up at the port and driven to Piran for a short walking tour of this scenic village with 15th c Venetian Gothic architecture with some free time on our own. We then drove thru the countryside to a small family owned winery for a tour and tastings. Lastly, we drove to Marina's horse farm for a short tour and then a fantastic lunch she had prepared for us that included appetizer, soup and salad, homemade bread, gnocci with wild boar and panna cotta with figs in wine sauce or strawberries. My mouth waters thinking of it. I had set up the tour on CruiseCritic for 6 and the others indicated this tour really had a WOW factor and they felt fortunate to be on this small tour. ONE of the VERY BEST TOURS we have ever taken is how I would describe our tour with Marina.
