A spot of white in the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, the island of Naxos is a unique blend of ancient ruins and beach culture. The largest of the Cycladic Islands, Naxos is the childhood home of none other than Zeus, king of the gods. Upon arrival in Naxos, hike over a causeway to Palatia, where the Portara, a stone gateway to an ancient temple that no longer exists, stands alone, the symbol of the island. At sunset, the views of the island, and the sea beyond, are breathtaking.

Naxian marble is a huge chapter in local life and economy, shaping characters and leaving a folklore imprint that is seen and felt throughout the island. Ever wondered how this amazing material is created and how our ancestors managed to extract it from the mountains and then manipulate it to create masterpieces? In this hands-on experience you’ll be taken to an imposing marble quarry where you’ll discuss about methods of mining, quality standards and so much more with one of the quarry owners. Next stop is further up on the mountains and the village of Apeiranthos, also known as “the marble village”: the ideal setting to enjoy a full lunch in a family tavern and to marvel at how locals managed to build an entire village out of their most beloved material. Afterwards, you'll attend a 2hour marble sculpting workshop at a professional marble sculptor's working space. By the time you leave, you will have carved your personal souvenir to take home with you, a masterpiece of your own!

We booked the munch around Naxos Town tour after a friend recommended the tour and it quickly became a highlight of our entire two week trip to Greece! Eleni is absolutely lovely, incredibly knowledgeable about the area, gave us a great tour of the city and introduced us to some of the yummiest food we had during our trip. We wandered Old Town and the Venetian Castle, ate at a local taverna, sampled Citron and had the most fabulous cheese and Greek wine tasting. It was like having a meal and drinks with old friends. Would highly recommend and we would do another tour if/when we come back to Naxos!

My son, daughter-in-law and I had booked a 14-day private tour of Athens, Crete, Santorini, Milos and Naxos with Private Tours Greece from May 1-14, 2020 and made a 30% down payment by credit card on 02/06/2020. All interactions with Private Tours Greece went smoothly and were professional and friendly. Then, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and my son's illness, on 03/13/2020, well ahead of the deadline for a fully-refundable cancellation, I asked Private Tours Greece to release all reservations it had made on our behalf, but to hold my deposit, in the hope that we might be able to reschedule our trip later in 2020 or in the spring of 2021. Private Tours Greece complied with my request and issued a credit voucher for the down payment I had made. As the pandemic continued to surge and Greece remained closed to visitors from the United States, on 4/17/2021, after essentially extending an interest-free loan to Private Tours Greece for over a year, I requested that my down payment be fully refunded and credited to the same credit card account to which it had been charged. Thereupon, Private Tours Greece staff claimed that the request for refund had been "forwarded" ... as it turned out later, to Alpha Bank. Nothing happened for a week. I then engaged in repeated e-mail exchanges with Private Tours Greece staff, only to be subjected to a stream of equivocations, obfuscations of the facts, and invalid excuses, including a claim that Private Tours Greece was doing me a favor by agreeing to a refund because the Greek government had allegedly given it the option to hold my funds indefinitely. I then contacted the general manager of the company, who sent me what purported to be a Greek language request to Alpha Bank (that I was unable to read) to issue the refund, along with further invalid excuses, never responding to my complaint that Private Tours Greece was in breach of its contractual obligation to issue a full refund of my down payment, not to mention doing the honorable thing, i.e., issue an immediate refund from an account he controlled directly, rather than blaming Alpha Bank for the delay by claiming that it "required" 10-15 "working" days to complete the request. Even that outlandishly ridiculous period has now expired! A complaint I submitted to Alpha Bank has received no response to date. It has now been nearly a full month since my refund request of 4/17/2021, and I may have to initiate legal action against Private Tours Greece ... with all the complexities and additional outlays and delays that would involve ... in order to reclaim my funds. The lesson to be learned here is that Private Tours Greece cannot be counted upon to honor its promises and contractual commitments. If there is any chance at all that you may have to cancel your trip, STAY AWAY!
