Top 10 Historical & Heritage Tours in Killarney, Province of Munster

January 15, 2022 Moriah Teneyck

Forget fashionable footwear, only your most comfortable shoes will cut it in Killarney. It's a walking town, and every trail is a history lesson. Journey on foot through Ireland's first national park, 26,000 acres of woodlands, sandstone mountains and low-lying lakes. When your feet wear out, take in Killarney National Park via boat from Ross Castle. And because there are more hotel beds in Killarney than in any other Irish town or city (besides Dublin), you'll always have a place to rest your head (and feet).

This is the BEST way to see the Ring of Kerry. William is extremely knowledgeable about the area and the history of Ireland in general. He took us places where the large tour coaches do not/cannot go, namely the Kerry Cliffs and seeing Skellig Michael. We had as much time as we needed to take in the sights. The convenience of being picked up/dropped off at our BnB was an added bonus. Thank you, William, for a very memorable day! Peter & Maggie

Paudie is an incredible guide and his Ring of Kerry tour is not to be missed! He was born and raised on the Ring of Kerry and, as a result, knows everything about the area and is friendly (or related to) most everyone who lives there. He took us places we never would have found on our own or seen on another tour, and we loved his stories of growing up in the area. The tour was entertaining, educational, and spectacularly beautiful. And his van is super comfortable and immaculate. Our kids loved Paudie and we look forward to seeing him again for another tour. We highly recommend!

Sure, have you never heard of an Irish half hour? It can stretch out for days and 5 days is what you’ve got to experience this memorable, expertly guided road trip, over ever-changing landscape, along The Wild Atlantic Way. From shucking Clarinbridge oysters and downing creamy stout in Galway, to the jaw dropping sights of the Ring of Kerry, with only the Atlantic separating the 40 shades from the 50 U.S. states. Cool down with Fungie, Dingle’s resident dolphin who came for the fish in 1984 and stayed for the craic or feel like you’re at the edge of the world, at the dramatic Cliffs of Moher. And how about a spot of kissing at the Blarney Stone where you’ll come away with the gift of the ‘gab’ (talk); handy for ‘having the craic’ with your small tour group. And in between the heritage and culture, bohemian Galway and dinky Doolin, there’ll be ceol agus craic (music and boldness), seafood and banter and an epic road-trip you’ll never forget.

Sadly, in these uncertain days of Coronavirus, I had to cancel my upcoming tour. The team at Overland Ireland were compassionate and understanding in working out the details so as to minimize losses all around. Flexible reschedule options into next year were offered as well. This is the kind of small company to support.

We had the luck of having David and Caroline as our driver and guides. This was a small bus tour that was able to stop in many places along the route that the large buses could not manage. In addition, they planned the day so that we avoided the same large buses at various stops. So informative a tour with a delightful couple as driver and guides. They were so accommodating that. when they heard we were staying in Tralee rather than Killarney, they drove us back rather than have us take a cab! Don't miss using this couple for your tour.

We booked a trip to Ross Castle based on the reviews of an “engaging guided tour through the National Park”. It was neither tbh. We got a young lad who quite frankly couldn’t have given a toss. We were booked for 3.15 so perhaps we were trip 4 or 5 of the day but still, he hardly spoke, when he did we didn’t understand a word. It wasn’t an enjoyable experience. I tipped him at the end for nothing other us being polite. I’m still angry at myself for handing over that extra bare minimum amount. Try somewhere else. This isn’t worth the money.
