The north Indian city of Varanasi, or Benares, is regarded as sacred by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Situated in the fertile Ganga valley and on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, who come to bathe in the holy river. Known as the City of Temples and a beacon of culture, Varanasi has produced many renowned writers. It’s also a center of silk weaving, so practice haggling at the chaotic bazaar for some beautiful souvenirs. Rickshaws are the best way to get about.

Visited Kaal Bhairav temple in the evening. Kaal Bhairav is known as nagar kotwal of Varanasi and hence must seek permission before entering Varanasi. We visited this temple first and by the grace of Bhairav baba our entire trip was well managed and obstacle free. We were able to have great darshan of Bhairav Baba and offered puja. It took us slightly more than an hour at the temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Varanasi. Situated in Bharonath, Vishweshwarganj (Varanasi), this temple has great historical and cultural importance for Hindus especially amongst the locals. The temple has a fierce form of Shiva which wears a garland of skulls and carries a club of peacock feathers. The word "Kaal" means both "death" and "fate". It is believed that even death is afraid of Kaal Bhairav. The main temple has a silver faced idol of Kal Bhairav who is seated on his vahana, a dog and is holding a trident. Only the face of the icon decorated with garlands is visible to the visitors through the doorway. Rest of the idol is covered with a piece of cloth. On the rear door of the temple, there is an icon of Kshetrapal Bhairav, another aspect of Bhairava. The temple opens at 5.00 am and closes at 1.30pm , then again opens at 4.30pm and closes in the night at 9.30pm.

Jantar Mantar, Varanasi is located next to the Dashaswamedh Ghat, the main ghat of the city. The site is housed in the 400 year old Man Mandir Palace and the astronomical instruments are on the terrace roof. Before viewing the instruments, there are three rooms on the ground floor of the palace created by the Archaeological Survey of India - all have easy-to-read and highly informative interpretive panels on the history of the Ganga, Varanasi, and the astronomical instruments - lots of photos, diagrams, and maps. A video called descendant of ganga was playing in the main room.

We went to Varanasi / Banaras for a week long trip during early March 2020 just before Coronavirus Pandemic erupt in India . This was truly a memorable trip for us of 2020 ! After seeing the mesmerizing programme of “Subah – e – Banaras” followed by morning sunrise ???? at Assi Ghat , we went for a morning boat ride ⛵ …….. Chet Singh Ghat was one of the best Ghats we viewed on our morning boat journey down the Ganga River ......... Built in the mid-18th Century, it was the site of a fierce battle between the local Maharaja Chait (or Chet) Singh and the troops of the representative of the British East India Company in 1781. The battle was a result of Chet Singh's refusal to provide Hastings with all the troops he demanded. Warren Hastings sent his army to Chet Singh’s fort and Chet Singh managed to escape, while Hastings’s army was fighting outside the fort ……… This is all about history ! This Ghat is in front of Chet Singh fort …….. Very imposing architecture ???? . The Ghat is much peaceful than others. All the Ghats of Varanasi on River Ganga have stairs up to the river and this one is also no exception. Definitely worth a viewing from the boat, and if you can navigate (or arrange) a way to visit by foot would be an OK visit ????????. Definitely a worth visiting Ghat on a boat ride ⛵ for its scenic beauty , specially for the photography lovers ???? ???? ! I highly recommended this place as ‘MUST VISIT PLACE’ in your Varanasi itinerary !! ????????
