Masterpiece of Roman art of 12th century, this Benedictine Abbey quickly became established as an active religious centre. The majestic ruins let discover remarkable sculpted capitals with biblical figures and monsters from ages or far oriental countries. From the top of its bell-tower, you can enjoy a remarkable view on the village and the countryside. In December 1998 the Abbey was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site as one of the stages on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
This place is well worth a visit and at 6 euros for an adult a bargain. You can get a good sense of what the place must have been like when it was fulkly operational. The climb up the tower is worth the effort and affords a terrific view of the surrounding countryside but also the foot print of the old Abbey. We took small binoculars which helped us to see some of the sculpture work. The museum has some pieces of note especially the floor tiles. A must see place if in the area.

50 km south of Bordeaux, Francois Mauriac's former property Malagar offers splendid panoramic views over the Garonne river valley, an exhibition tracing his commitments as a political writer and a thrilling guided visit through this Nobel prize winner's literature. François Mauriac inherited this family estate in 1927 which quickly became a privileged and inspiring home. Donated by the children of the writer, Malagar belongs to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Région since 1986 and is a classified Historic Monument. The François Mauriac Centre has been awarded the « Houses of the Illustrious » label. It provides a valuable resource centre and mediation activities for schools and students, with a strong commitment for cultural events and live entertainment.

Le Port de la Lune is the old harbour at Bordeaux on the Garonne. Nowadays it loosely refers to the promenade between the Pont de Pierre and the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas. The backdrop on the Left Bank is beautiful and it is a pleasant place to walk, cycle, or run on a sunny day. The old port is no longer in operation but there are still occasional visits from cruise ships. It is far from the best way to experience Bordeaux but fortunately these monstrosities do not stay for long. It is also possible to get a small boat along the Bordeaux stretch of the Garonne from here. The promenade as a whole is lovely. Several spectacular buildings face it such as the Palais de la Bourse which in the right period of the year is reflected in the Miroir de l'Eau. The buildings generally that can be seen from the promenade are lovely. The Garonne is a flowing river and dredges up quite a lot of mud. Despite that it is a thoroughly pleasant waterway to pass alongside. The view to the Right Bank is much less interesting and is clearly the poorer relation. The bridges at either end are impressive in their own ways but form a backdrop rather than a core part of the area. The aspect that makes this area work is how lively it is. There are always people enjoying the area passively or actively. A particular highlight is coming across street dance collectives by the Miroir de l'Eau. On Sundays a nice little market springs up mainly swelling fresh products. At the new bridge end there is a shopping avenue with a series of restaurants. The whole area is well maintained despite its popularity. It is a genuine pleasure to experience and a wonderful promenade.
