Once a mountain mining town decimated and nearly destroyed by river dredging, the surprisingly versatile Breckenridge has bounced back over the last century to become one of Colorado's top year round alpine getaways, with all-seasons activities galore. Restoration of the river area has led to the creation of pristine hiking trails and greenery in the summer months, but winter is the real draw. Skiers flock to the groomed slopes, chutes and bowls of Breckenridge Ski Resort by the million.

This trail had everything for us (we are not super hikers). You get to walk here from downtown quite easily (no car hassles). You begin up and underneath the ski lift and then enter a wonderful section alongside a bustling little river. You pass over a few fairly new wood bridges and eventually come up to the Sawmill Reservoir (we would pack out lunch and have a picnic along the way or at the reservoir). A true gem!

We took our kids (14, 4, 7, and 3). They all had a blast walking the lake to the waterfall, hiking, etc. beware there are lots of mountain goats at the upper lot. They will lick and chew your car. We had better luck parking at the upper top lot or down by the lake. It is really peaceful and beautiful. You can get there in a regular car, but we found it useful having an suv because of some of the dips and mud.

The trail head is on the left side of the dam - look for a brown metal post and climb up through the rocks to reach the trail. We missed this trail head on the way into the gulch and started out hiking along the dam and then eventually taking a steep trail up; it is much easier to just climb up the rocky area in the beginning and stay higher up on the trail into the gulch. The wildflowers in the gulch were beautiful...and we saw a family of mountain goats down by the lower lake in the morning and then a few by the dam when we returned - so much fun!

Loved this hike! It was about 2 miles in and 2 miles out, and took us about 3 hours to complete, stopping for lots of pictures. I'm not a fan of big drop offs, so the ride to this hiking trail was ROUGH for me, but slow and steady and you get there. We arrived early - around 8:30 or 9 to avoid the larger crowds and ended up getting a close parking spot. You have to park about a third to a half a mile away from the gated entrance to the area and then you have about another quarter of the mile before you reach the actual trail. Some spots on the trail are hard to tell where you are going, but it is almost impossible to get lost. Gorgeous views of the mountains, a waterfall, and a beautiful lake that feeds the falls await you on the glorious hike. I would rate this trail as an easy to moderate hike for people that are active and well due to narrow bridges, uneven rock and some steep inclines. I also highly suggest taking water with you and possibly a snack to eat. Get up early to beat the crowds. There is one part of the trail that was clearly washed out by a rock slide. The trail completely disappears, so you must traverse the rocks to continue on your journey. The beautiful part of this hike is that everywhere you look and go, there is something spectacular to look at. This is a must do for active folks when visiting Breckenridge. Take home tips: 1. Bring water - I wore my camelback that stored enough H2O for the three of us hiking 2. Wear shoes with a good grip - hiking boots or trail running shoes are best - some areas are smooth and its very easy to fall 3. Go early and avoid the crowds 4. Bring a camera or a GoPro for good pictures

This was such an amazing hike to truly experience the Rocky Mountains. You have to start with the Spruce Creek Trail to connect to the lake and falls trails unless you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We parked here and started walking. The trail starts in the trees along the creek, but is still mostly uphill. Then it starts opening up more, but gets even steeper. You will walk right next to an awesome waterfall. After this you reach the lower lake. We took a break here as it is another steep hike to the upper lake. It is so peaceful at the top, so it is well worth it. The trails can get busy, but that was helpful to make sure we were going the right way. It was a very fun 6 hour hike where we got in probably 8 miles total.

Difficult to find Trail head since it is across parking lot and at base of T Bar. Locals all "knew-it" but confounded me with their directions The trail is steady and climbs .. you loose the river on the way up.
