Old Kilbeggan Distillery

In the heart of Ireland, just over 1 hour from Dublin lies the town of Kilbeggan, home to the world's oldest distillery, established in 1757. It is the quintessential Irish whiskey distillery - whitewashed walls, weathered slate roof, brick chimney stack, creaking timber water wheel, even regular ghost sightings. This is no mere "visitor centre" but a real working distillery run by a team of young enthusiastic craftspeople (and a few wise old heads too), skilled in the traditional ways of making Irish whiskey. Open 7 days (except during Christmas and New Year). Whiskey Bar. Gift Shop. Free parking.

We visited the Kilbeggan Distillery in October 2019 and it was an amazing experience for our guests, participating in our Whiskey Tour in Ireland. The Kilbeggan Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery situated on the River Brosna in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, Ireland. It is owned today by Beam Suntory. It started as a small pot still distillery, the licence to distil dates to 1757, a copy of which can be seen in the distillery. Similar to many Irish distilleries, Kilbeggan endured financial difficulties during the early 20th century, and ceased operations in 1957. In 1982, 25 years after the distillery ceased operations, the Kilbeggan Preservation and Development Association was formed by locals in the town. Using funds raised locally, the Association restored the Distillery, and reopened it to the public as a whiskey distillery museum. Then in 1987 Cooley Distillery bought the newly opened facility. In 2011 Beam bought Cooley and in 2014 Beam was then purchased by Suntory Holdings and became its Beam Suntory subsidiary. However, the distillery became fully operational in 2007. At the end of the tour we enjoyed of course a lovely Whiskey tasting there.

Animal interaction at it's best. See all the funny antics of our friendly animals, you will get to feed, pet and even hold some of them. Over 50 species of animals to see, an 1850s cottage, a nature walk and fairy trail, a large outdoor and indoor play area and a soft play toddler area, so there is something for eeryone. Lots to do throughout the year: Summer season runs from March to Sept (please check our website for exact dates), Easter Egg Hunts Easter Sat, Sun and Mon at 3pm, Halloween Spooktastic Event during the mid term break, and foe the month of December the farm is transfered into Ireland's Lapland.

My boyfriend and I went down here for the day and wow! They’ve got so many beautiful animals and you get a bag of feed so you can walk around the farm and feed the animals as you go around! There’s really beautiful animals like alpacas, llama’s, deer, chickens and more! It’s the perfect place to bring kids as there’s a playground and a coffee shop on sight too! Couldn’t highly recommend Glendeer Pet Farm enough!

We had an absolutely lovely cycle on the delightful Old Rail Trail. We went from Castletown Station to Moate and back. I really can't praise the powers that be enough for developing this wonderful amenity. Lovely views of the surrounding countryside and great to be out among the sounds of nature. AIt is really well surfaced and is plenty wide enough to allow faster cyclists by or to allow two way travel.

Belvedere House Gardens & Park

Located within Ireland’s Ancient East with many layers of life and history in the big house, Belvedere House Gardens & Park demonstrates beauty, intrigue and passion that make for an enchanting Visitor Experience and an excellent day out with a difference. The magnificent 160 acre Lakeside Estate of Belvedere House, Gardens & Park boasts a fully restored Georgian Villa, built in 1740 by the famous Architect Richard Castles. The estate has a fascinating Victorian Walled Garden, with one of Ireland's finest collections of rare and special plants. The naturalistic designed 18th century parkland, punctuated with Romantic Follies includes the largest in Ireland; “The Jealous Wall”. Within the welcoming Visitor Services Centre is a Licensed Restaurant and Gift Shop and there are also 3 outdoor children’s play areas, a zip line & many picnic areas on the estate.

We recently revisited Belvedere House and Gardens, surely one of the most storied houses in Westmeath. Designed by Richard Castle as a fishing / hunting lodge for the"Wicked Earl", Rober Rochford. It is set in magn ificient grounds which have been enhanced by a variety of colourful owners. Several 18th C follies survive, the largest of which is 'The Jealous Wall', built to block the view of his brother's house at nearby Tudenham! At the moment the house is closed due to Covid restrictions but the gardens, childrens' playground, parklands, lakeside walks etc are all open. The restored Victorian walled-garden is jaw-droppingly georgeous and full of surprises including a magical fairy garden tucked away in a corner. Belvedere is beautiful at any time but Autumn in Belvedere is extra special with something for everyone. I would highly recomment it. The staff are very welcoming and well informed and the restaurant is excellent.
