The town of Musselburgh has a long association with the game of golf having hosted The Open Championship on the links course on six occasions in the 1870's and 1880's. The town can also boast having five Open Champions, who between them, won eleven championships - more than any other town. When The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers moved to Muirfield from their home at the 9 hole Links Course in 1891, they took with them the venue for the Open. In an attempt to re-establish its association with the Open, Musselburgh Town Council decided to build an 18 hole championship golf course in the town. Unfortunately it was not until the 1930's that suitable land became available and the 5 times Open Champion James Braid, who, in his later years became a renowned golf course architect, was commissioned to design the new course at Monktonhall. He designed a championship standard course, which at 6725 yards long is a true test of golf for even the most accomplished golfer. The new course was officially opened by a fourball of James Braid, Percy Alliss, Henry Cotton and Alf Padgham on 10th May 1938 and has been the home of The Musselburgh Golf Course ever since. For 70 years the layout of the course has remained virtually unchanged, a fact which bears testament to the ability and foresight of its designer. During these years the course has hosted many amateur championships and on two occasions the Scottish Professional Championship. Musselburgh has been appointed as one of the venues for Local Final Qualifying along with Gullane, Dunbar & North Berwick, when the Open returns to Muirfield in 2013. One of several challenging golf courses designed by James Braid.
Stopped in today before a round of golf, had the worlds greatest breakfast roll. Black pudding crumbly, yet incredibly soft and fulfillling. Bacon perfectly cooked, crispy yet, not. God only knows how you managed it. Driving range, average. Latte, mediocre. Will return, much love.

The James Braid designed Prestonfield course is nestled below the stunning backdrop of Arthur’s seat in a former deer estate. With the imposing backdrop and mature trees, you would be forgiven for thinking the course was set in a country estate rather than only 1.5 miles from Edinburgh city centre. The views alone make Prestonfield a must visit, but the challenging 6200 yard course is also a gem. It is one of the longer in the city centre, yet is still a gentle walk with no severe gradients. Home to the PGA Prestonfield Pro Am since 2007 and also a regular fixture on the Lothians Golf Association and Scottish Ladies Golf Association calendar
Superb course bear Edinburgh city centre. James Braid laid it out after the famous Dr Alister McKenzie had first walked the land. It's the club's centenary in 2020 and lots of history. A great introduction to Scotland if you've just flown in. The food and drink were first class and the views down to the bass rock from the clubhouse are outstanding.
