Ben Owen III is a potter from Seagrove, North Carolina. His forefathers came to NC from England as early as the late 1700s to ply their craft and furnish storage jars and other utilitarian wares to early settlers. Like his grandfather, Ben III’s pottery reflects a foundation in traditional designs alongside Asian influences. The Pottery shop and studio is open to visitors where one can see pots being made and a museum to learn more about the tradition of pottery making in the Owen family.
The family has been making pottery for at least 4 generations. In addition to traditional forms, they sell work reflecting an Asian influence. Ben is famous for his China red glaze, but his others are, in my opinion, as interesting. There is also an attached museum.

Let me start out by saying I used to own a fine craft and art gallery in North Carolina, I sold a lot of pottery and many of my potters came from Seagrove so I know a bit about pottery and know how various kinds are made including Crystalline. I didn’t know Pam and William at that time, I discovered them after I sold my gallery so I can give an unbiased review of Uwharrie Pottery. I have talked with hundreds of potters not only in Seagrove but at various studios and craft shows all over the state. Pam and William are very personable and rather than make how they produce their pottery a deep, dark secret, they go out of their way to educate you as to how it’s done. That impressed me right off the bat. Next is the pottery itself which is absolutely stunning, so much so that I have two sets of lamps they made to my specifications. In fact my house is filled with their pottery as there is always something I can’t resist when I visit. Their pottery is practical as well as decorative. Finally, there is the price point. There are other Crystalline potters in Seagrove and some more famous but I can tell you no one has more beautiful pottery and no one offers better prices. Uwharrie Crystalline Pottery is definitely a Must See stop if you are visiting Seagrove.

There are so many pottery places to visit in Segrove...will need to return to visit more. We stopped first at the North Carolina Pottery Center first and looked at samples of many local artists. A great place to start and pick up a listing and road map of all the artists in the area. This particular one caught my eye because she had a gourd on display and I like pottery gourds. Her shop is delightful. Quaint setting. She has a studio adjacent to the retail store. When I looked on line she has day classes several times during the year. Will consider this for a future return visit to the area.
