With its gondolas, canals, amazing restaurants, and unforgettable romantic ambiance, Venice is definitely a city for one's bucket list. Waterfront palazzos, palaces, and churches make drifting down the Grand Canal feel like cruising through a painting. To really experience Venice you must go to the opera or to a classical music performance, nibble fresh pasta and pastries, and linger in the exhibit halls of an art gallery. Label lovers will drool over the high-end shopping in Piazza San Marco.

If you want to buy glass when visiting Venice, make your way to Murano by vaporetto and visit the atalier of glass master Cesare Toffolo. All products are of the highest quality, are genuinely hand made and are exquisite. I bought several pieces including earings, necklaces, miniature perfume bottles of various colours (excellent value at 16 euros each) and a beautiful, ornate glass goblet. The necklaces were made by Elia Toffolo, Cesare's son, a maestro in his own right and although simple in design look stunning when worn. I was served by Signora Toffolo, the maestro's wife -this is a genuine family business - who is a charming, knowledgeable, very helpful and extremely honest. I'm delighted with my purchases and cannot recommend Cesare Toffolo highly enough.

We bought a gorgeous perfume bottle here made by Angelo the founder’s son. They make all of the glass in the shop in their own workshop. The prices were really good. My bottle was 25 euro, much cheaper than others I had seen. They are not open a lot of hours as the founders that run the shop are older.

Our hotel in Venice arranged a private boat trip to this excellent Murano glass factory. We were met and escorted to a small group of people watching a glass blowing demonstration where the artist made a lovely clear glass horse with blue inside. After that we were shown around the very extensive showrooms. Room after room of incredible pieces ranging from traditional glasses and chandeliers to realistic sharks and turtles and to modern lamps and vases. I asked if we could go upstairs and there we saw even more incredible pieces. I eventually settled on a modern vase signed by the artist. Payment made and shipping was arranged. The whole experience was very friendly and professional. My case arrived in Canada about 3 1/2 weeks later, expertly packaged. And with a coffee table book on the artist. I would definitely recommend this place. P.S. As a gesture of thanks they gave my daughter the horse.
