Coveted by empires and republics throughout its history, Innsbruck was the seat of the imperial court of Maximilian I by the end of the 15th century. Trams make getting around the city quick, efficient and cheap. Explore the Tyrolean capital's history at Archduke Ferdinand II's 10th-century Schloss Ambras, the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, the grand 15th-century Imperial Palace and Maximilian I's famous Golden Roof. One of Europe's most idyllic cities, Innsbruck is nestled in the heart of the Alps.

This place is tiny but packs in some of the best craft beers around, which is a nice change from the usual lagers and wheat beers on offer around town. The store owner is quite friendly and encourages you to order anything you wish from the beer fridges of which there are many to choose from, and he's more than happy to give recommendations depending on your beer tastes. It's great to sit and chat with other travellers as well. There's lots of choices from all over Austria and around Europe. You need to keep stock of the empty bottles and cans you've had so that you can pay at the end though, but he keeps the costs pretty low. This might have been the best thing I did in Innsbruck.
