Eriko-san’s tea ceremony was a highlight of our 10 days in Japan! Artful, unrushed, tranquil, cozy. On a small street in an understated house separate from Higashi Chaya and other touristy areas. Go out of your way to email and schedule with her and you won’t be disappointed.

We learned how gold leaf is made from blocks of solid gold that are imported from other countries. It is an amazingly labour intensive process and very interesting. The shop sells beautiful objects, the staff very friendly. Together with a visit nearby of the Gold leaf museum with excellent movie about the process, we got a real good understanding and appreciation. Only missing is a film about the application on screens, lacquerware and others.

Founded in 1916, Nousaku began manufacturing Buddhist alter fittings, tea-ceremony utensils and flower vases made of brass and bronze in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. It now also makes interior products, tableware and medical equipment. Our advanced casting techniques, expert knowledge, tradition, spirit and creativity have been passed down through generations over a long period of time. When we arrived in Kanazawa we hadn't planned on doing anything with gold leaf, but after a stop at the gold leaf museum, we sought out Hakuza because as crafters we read that they did mini workshops. Hakuza advertises a number of gold leaf workshops a day. We turned up at the shop just after the time one would have started. They were more than happy for my friend and I to do the mini workshop (reasonably priced). We had a choice of gold leafing chopsticks or stencilling a black plate. We did the plate and it came out beautifully. Our instructor was super lovely, patient and helpful. We then went on to buy a few more trinkets in the store. The building, the store, the famous gold leaf wall were all very sparkky and blingy but really interesting with helpful smiley staff and there are some cute gold touches in unexpected places. I'd recommend the shop and/or workshop if you are passing through this popular district and have time to have a go at an ancient 'craft'.
