When travelling in the West, my son and I always enjoy stopping by the local rock shop to see what mineral and fossil specimens we can find and to, hopefully, add a few to our collection. We were very pleased to find that Things that Rock offered quite a few different local items at affordable prices. One of their specialties is rose quartz, relatively rare and originally discovered in the 1880’s in a large deposit in nearby Custer, we just had to pick-up a nice, well saturated specimen. Perhaps going a bit overboard, we also selected a piece of petrified wood that looks so much like wood, that you do not realize it is stone till you pick it up; an interesting piece of black tourmaline; and, my favorite, fossilized teeth from a Mesohippus, a small, extinct horse from 30 to 40 million years ago. The shop proprietors were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful so if you are interest in minerals, we would certainly recommend a stop at Things that Rock.

My kids and I love to come here. I shop and they relax in the Fermob swings under the aspen trees. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and they actually like children. I have found Mothers' Day presents, teachers' gifts, funny cards, and a great sun hat here. It's close to Main Street, but the atmosphere is a world away!

From name brands to new brands, The Handbag Store offers classic, upscale and down-to-earth styles to explore. Shop in-store at 253 Main Street, Hill City SD May to September. Shop online year round.
I stopped in this shop while walking in the downtown. What a cute shop. They have a nice mix of bags. The woman was very friendly and pointed me to the clearance area, as well as asked if I was looking for anything in particular. The shop is small, and was pretty busy. I bought a small bag for me, as well as one for a gift. Certainly a place anyone who likes purses should stop. They have some really unique choices.

Mount Rushmore was never on my "must do" list. But it was incredible. I'm so glad we made it and watched the end-of-the-day festivities and lighting of the monument. Photos don't do it justice, and truly, it should be part of everyone's travels. It's off the beaten path (a bit) but worth it.

What a pleasant find in The Black Hills area. Early in our vacation, I lost an artisan-crafted ring with my birthstone. I vowed to find a replacement but had no idea where I would find a one-of-a-kind ring. As we walked the streets of Hill City, SD, after dinner at Desperadoes, we passed a unique store with a window front that immediately intrigued me. I vowed to go back during business hours and did two days later. OMG! They carry a vast array of artisan-crafted jewelry and other accessories. I explained what I was looking for and was immediately shown at least a dozen different rings. Each was beautiful and I slowly began to narrow down my selection. When I thought I had seen everything with my birthstone, they pulled out one more. And that was the one! Since then, I've purchased earrings online. The customer service here is unbelievable! Check it out if you are anywhere in the Black Hills area.
