Waterfront palazzos, palaces, and churches make drifting down the Grand Canal feel like cruising through a painting. To really experience Venice you must go to the opera or to a classical music performance, nibble fresh pasta and pastries, and linger in the exhibit halls of an art gallery. Label lovers will drool over the high-end shopping in Piazza San Marco.

My boyfriend and I spent a day shopping for a mask for me to wear to a ball. We walked the whole of Venice and found this shop by accident. The masks are all made on the premises, you can venture into the workshop as there are shelves of masks for sale in there. All masks are unique. ( remember they are artisan pieces so don't expect cheap). But they are good value for money. The owners Allesandro and Patrizia are helpful and charismatic. If you are lucky, you may get to witness Allesandro perform for you a brief history of masks. It was one of my highlights, and definately memorable. Thank you so much.

Mistero Buffo is one of the last surviving artisan workshops in Venice, where Leonardo Faggian, maestro mascheraio, creates masks using traditional techniques and procedures that date back to the 14th century. Each mask is entirely handcrafted from start to finish, from the sculpted clay model, the negative mold, the papier-mâché raw mask, to its intricate decoration with high quality pigments, gold leaf, fabric, Murano glass beads, and its final protective and antiquating touch. Each mask is a unique one-off piece of artistic craftsmanship, a result of Leonardo’s seasoned aesthetic and technical skills and creative expressiveness, and can be worn or used as decoration. Mistero Buffo’s masks can be bought on site in our workshops, or ordered via mail or phone, and shipped abroad. We also make personalized masks on request. For orders, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us directly.
We took a private mask-making workshop with Margherita and Leonardo in August 2019 with our kids (a teen and a tween). We have traveled all over the world with our kids (28 countries) and this was one of the best experiences we have ever had anywhere. The family is among the oldest mask-makers in Venice. The workshop took place in their studio and included history as well as personal instruction on mask-making for over two hours. They are lovely people and this workshop takes place in their studio. We learned so much and would actually do this again in a heartbeat. Amazing. Just book it!

We enjoined our Venetian mask making. And it is the best souvenir, a self made mask. We loved it and our kids even more.

The biggest and most ancient bookstore in Venice. Opened in 1933 it has a good selection of books in english, french, spanish, german and russian language. Lot of used books. Books about Venice and gift items
I know several bookshops in Venice but this one, in Dorsodouro area, is probably the most serious and best furnished one. Absolutely recommendable.
