Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the countrys third largest urban area.

Eyris Blue Pearls® come only from New Zealand abalone, aka paua, cultured right here in Akaroa harbour. On the Main Wharf in Akaroa, in the Blue Pearls Gallery, our jewellers create unique Blue Pearl pieces right in front of you. You can see the entire creation process from start to finish—from sketch, to Eyris pearl setting, to the completed piece. “This is how Blue Pearls should be exhibited in all their iridescent glory”, says the owner of the Blue Pearls Gallery, Jack Pawlowski. Come in and enjoy these unique Kiwi pearls!
Before my holiday, I had seen a documentary in Canada which informed me about Akaroa's blue pearl industry. The shop itself features informative videos about the farming of blue pearls. They have a good selection of jewelry in a wide range of prices so that it's possible to leave with a piece that doesn't break the bank. The woman who served me took time not to rush the sale, was very friendly, told us about their pre-quake Christchurch location and shared a story about Ian McKellen (his photo with shop owners is on the wall) visiting their store when it was in Christchurch. I hope her Christmas stockings from the US arrived for the holidays! Thank you again, Blue Pearl Gallery.

We wandered into this shop after stopping into the Country Cafe. I was looking for a high end possum and merino sweater and had been to other shops without finding what I was looking for. I found quite a few sweaters here that could be used for different purposes at many price points. Customer service was informative and I did not feel rushed at all. I put on many different sweaters before deciding on one. My wife picked up a jacket here as well.

Our shop is a delightful mix of new and old. There are wonderful and surprising things to see for everyone - from the "Bloke's Shed" to our selection of fine jewelry. It is often described as the best shop in New Zealand. It is an eclectic mix of antiques, rare books, gifts, collectables, tools, fine china, vintage and new jewelry, and an ever-changing range of fun and fine gift items.
When we stopped at Omara on our trip around the south island of New Zealand we stopped at the Big Rooster Antiques and Collectables store. Walking through the shop the variety of interesting Antiques and Collectables was amazing. Their prices were also very reasonable as were the prices on the souvenirs. The prices on the New Zealand Jade or Greenstone were the cheapest prices i have seen on my holiday. We purchased a number of items including two green stone carvings. The lady serving was very friendly and answering questions on various items was a pleasure to her. She was very knowledgeable and interesting to talk to. The green stones were blessed by a Maori elder and this was a pleasure to hear. Overall THIS IS A MUST VISIT STORE WHEN VISITING OMARA. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
