Located on the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany, Basel contains the country's highest concentration of museums. The culture-centric city, site of the world's most influential art market each June, is also home to the lovely Munster Cathedral, made of red sandstone with a multi-colored tile roof. Green spaces abound, including the popular zoological gardens in the city center. Switzerland's largest site of Roman ruins, Augusta Raurica, are an easy day trip to the east.

Jakob’s Basler Leckerly is a true cookie pioneer: the oldest cookie manufacturing company in Switzerland was founded in 1753 and in continuous operation. The recipe of our cookies was passed from generation to generation since the company's foundation. Still today, the Jakob’s Basler Leckerly are authentically manufactured in the old town of Basel. The gourmet cookies are ideal accompaniments with deserts and coffee. The Basler Leckerly are also a tasty snack during a break.
This is a lovely little shop. After reading about it being the oldest cookie and me having a sweet tooth, this place was a must.

In a country noted for its chocolate, Laderach is in a category all its own. It has several locations in Basel and I think in a few other Swiss cities. Their unique concept is that all of their chocolate flavors are displayed in stacks of amazing chocolate slabs. You tell the server behind the counter how much you want and they break a piece off and weigh it. You can buy at the counter or choose from many beautifully pre-packaged "stacks" on shelves throughout the store ranging in price from 10-15 Swiss francs for the smaller packages up into the hundreds of dollars. We tried a chunk of the dark chocolate with hazelnuts and raisins (divine!) and a beautiful sample pack with 6 or 8 varieties (also scrumptious). These are delicious chocolates unlike any I've seen before, sold in a beautiful shop with friendly service. You'll want everything!

We are always on the hunt for local fine chocolates. Laderach is it! They have quite the selection of barks, bonbons, caramels, and MORE! We spent a lot of time selecting lots of chocolate as we were determined to bring home gifts. Needless to say, we came home empty. The chocolates were that wonderful!

While on a day trip to Basel my husband and I just had to visit this store after reading the reviews. We love collecting Christmas ornaments from different countries so it was only natural for us to want to go here. Yes, there is a huge selection but I couldn't find a nice piece for the centre of my table. However, we did buy some ornaments for our tree and look forward to putting them on at Christmas. If you love Christmas then a visit here is recommended.

Stopped here for tea break. Loved their 75% dark cocoa hot drink, not too bitter! The small piece of chocolate that came with the drink is also very good. Had chocolate cake as well, it's rich and delicious.
