A group of 4 of us spent a week with Boyan. Most of us came from a background in sea kayaking, but also K1 / K2 flat water paddling. Two of us own Epic V8 Pros and two own Rockpool Tarans and we had varying experience in downwind conditions at home in Northern Ireland. One of the group had paddled with Boyan 2 or 3 times before and the Surfski Center came highly recommended. On a practical note, we flew to Malaga, spent a night enjoying the 'culture' and travelled to Tarifa next day by hire car (it's about a 2 hour drive, worked out about the same price as a return bus ticket and gave us added flexibility). We had opted to paddle 4 days out of 5, to allow for a day off mid week. Not only did this give us a rest and a chance to explore, but it gave us flexibility in the event of a non-paddling day due to weather conditions, which didn't happen :-) Tarifa's location allows for good conditions in a range of wind directions. The format each day typically involves a class room session and a couple of sessions on the water. Boyan has a great style of teaching. It's fun and it gets you thinking. I was totally engaged, it all made sense. And then it's reinforced out on the water, each day building on what was learned the day before. Winds were mainly from the west while we were there and we paddled two stretches of coast to the west of Tarifa a few times each and the longer stretch from Tarifa to (almost) Gibraltar twice. Mostly we were in Epic V8s with two sessions in V8 doubles. Boyan was able to give specific pointers for all 4 of us to work on. For me, it was about learning to read waves by what's going on in front, not having to look behind. Be selective. Watch for the good ones and catch them with strong, complete strokes. "No point in spinning the wheels" was one of many great analogies. "Catch them while they're young", another. Avoid over-sweeping at the end of the stroke. It's ok to brace, it's ok to put your legs in the water - to stop suddenly, or to rest. Oh, and if the big waves aren't gong in the direction you want, look for the other ones. There were typically 3 waves patterns in play and it was fun learning to spot them and select the right one! Other pointers for the group were around posture, engaging the legs and ensuring the blade is fully in the water. Every day, without exception, I noticed an improvement in my paddling and the rest of the lads said the same. We stayed in an apartment near Boyan's place. There are shops, a 'Mercadona' supermarket and some really good restaurants and bars within 5 mins walk, and Tarifa's old town is only 25 mins walk away, with a huge variety of places to experience. So what's next? I'm not long back and have already had a chance to get out on the water and try out my new skills. My V8 Pro felt a bit tippy by comparison to the V8 but that will come right. Would I go back to Tarifa? You bet.
