Top 10 Gardens in North Holland Province, The Netherlands

April 22, 2022 Diedre Savory

Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

Wester-Amstel

Wester-Amstel: Country House and Park Since 1662 is a piece of serenity located just a bike ride away from Amsterdam. It's located on the banks of the Amstel River and at the last river bend before Ouderkerk. Wester-Amstel is the perfect destination to escape the city and venture into the surrounding countryside. Our house, park, and gardens are enriched by four centuries of history. We highly recommend our audio tour (available in English and Dutch). It will take you on a wonderful stroll through our estate and entertain you with stories of times long past. The benches and picnic spots will give you the perfect excuse to just sit back and relax. We heard about Wester Amstel through a friend and decided to give it a go, over last weekend. Must say, it was one of the most fulfilling experience I have had with my family in Netherlands. The estate is a hidden gem that unfolds itself if you start exploring it. From fruit orchard to flowerbeds, from old farm house (with an incredible and interesting history) to oak plantations (and a mini cozy tea house in the corner), it is a truly enriching experience that transports you to a unique natural and historical feel. The owners and staff are equally hospitable as the total environment. They take a personal pride and interest in showing around and sharing stories about the history of entire estate in a very engaging way (of course if they are available). Our daughter had a specially great time picking pears and apples from orchard and running behind chickens. All in all a great day we spent and would love to visit time and again.

The park itself is very beautiful and leafy. There's lots of benches where you can relax and eat your picnic lunch. The park is clearly favored by locals and there are lots of dog walkers. Some cute dogs were interested in our sandwiches. The dogs are however very well trained. Although Amsterdam can be hectic, this is a peaceful place.

Museumhuis Beeckestijn

This large country estate is a fine example of suburban houses and their vast surrounding gardens build by the regents from Amsterdam as a holiday retreat for the summer. If you have visited the Museum, do not forget to visit the gardens! They are very worthwhile.
