I stumbled on the restaurant by accident and was very pleased. Food is simple, unpretentious and the owner/cook was a pleasure. a welcome change from the pretentious gorging that is so common.

A recommander .

We were looking for somewhere to eat in Mende and saw a sign over an alley. We hesitated but a local guy said it was very good. So down a few steps and up a few into a grassed courtyard with plenty of outside seating and as much again inside. Service and food was amazing. Well worth a visit.

I lived in Mende as an English Language Assistant for a school year and Les Voutes was one of the best restaurants in town. The restaurant is the interior of what appears to be a hallowed-out cave (from whence it derives its name), so there are no windows, but the walls are velvety grey stone and, as I recall, there are candles on the tables, giving it a very nice ambiance. The food was quite reasonable, provided you do not go all out (apertifs, salad, entree, cheese course, dessert, coffee...) If you are traveling on a budget, stick to a basic entree and dessert, and simply drink water with your meal, and you will enjoy yourself for under $20. They serve pizza (french style, unfortunately: with Emmental cheese instead of Mozzarella) and pastas with meat sauces, all of which are very good, and their desserts are amazing-- the chocolate ice cream is the actual color of a dark chocolate candy bar (note to UK readers: here in the US, our chocolate ice cream is a pale light brown) and agonizingly good. They feature ice cream sundaes with clever names, none of course which I can remember now, topped with mountains of chantilly (whipped cream). Les Voutes is really popular with the university students in town (there are at least two schools-- one for travel and tourism, and one for teacher training-- in Mende that I know of, so there are quite a few twentysomethings in what you would assume would be an otherwise sleepy town). Friday and Saturday nights, the place would be packed. They opened for dinner at 7pm, and it was necessary to arrive there as soon as they opened, so as to be finished by the time the place was packed and so full of cigarette smoke that the air was foggy. However, now with France having passed and (supposedly) enforcing a smoking ban, hopefully this will no longer be a drawback, which was the sole con in a long list of pros for this place. Definitely go!

La Safraniere offers local specialities with a Mediterranean twist - the chef knows all about flavours. A beef carpaccio included crushed olives as well as slivers of a local sheep's cheese. Trout is a speciality, both fresh and smoked. Guinea fowl (probably the best I've ever tasted) came with a compote of fennel, artichoke hearts and dried tomatoes which was to die for, as was the potato puree liberally laced with olive oil. A creme brulee with a hint of lavender came with a strawberry sorbet that was bursting with flavour. Service was professional and not rushed. The setting is delightful, in a small village within easy reach of Mende (a very attractive town in its own right). But it's small, so be sure to book. They also offer a traiteur service, which could be a good option if you were in a gite or camping in the vicinity.

We had a dinner here during our stop in Mende. The lady was very efficient but, as the tables got filled up, being alone, she could not cope with the crowd and service slowed down considerably. Food was good but a bit too pricey considering the quality.

A wonderful little restaurant near the catherdral, La Cantine, was more than we expected. Be sure to make a reservation. We chose a three course menu of beautifully prepared local and organic produce. Each dish was elegant in presentation with an option for vegetarian. French cuisine at its finest. You will not be disappointed and I would go as far as to say our best meal in France to date. Arnaud, Owner and waiter, explains the menu in English and made us feel very welcome. To top the night off Rhubarb tart and home made ice cream for desert and a great coffee.
