Things to do in Jarnac
We have tried this place a few times. Once we arrived at 1.30pm for lunch and told they had run out of food. Very rude staff and would never go back there again. We visit Jarnac every year around April and have done for the last 3 years - I would not recommend this place.

A surprisingly quirky restaurant in a beautiful setting. The food I had was very rich and sumptuous. I'd say it was for those who enjoy playful interaction of tastes and textures.

Lovely food. We ate here on numerous occasions and the food was consistent as was the service. Great salads and duck. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Great with children. Would highly recommend.

booked lunch to celebrate a birthday. We had the menu gourmand which at â¬70 was extremely good value. 6 wonderful courses all beautifully presented with great ingredients. The veal wellington was particularly good. Great service and an extensive wine list which ranged from good value to very expensive! Highly recommended and worth a revisit.

The Place du Chateau in Jarnac is currently home to 4 restaurants. In terms of lunchtime value for money the Café de Theatre is outstanding - a main course for less than 10â¬, a three course meal for about 12â¬; coffee at â¬1.10 and other beverages very reasonably priced. The owners have run the café for more than 35 years. Recently they revamped their lunchtime menu (only served Monday to Friday) in the face of increasing competition and they now offer choices (2 or 3) for the starter and the main course; the quality is usually outstanding for that price. The owner (Maurice) has a good taste in wine so, taking a "demi" between two people is a pleasant complement to a lazy meal; he also has a very reasonable collection of wines by the bottle. They have a little courtyard ("patio") at the back which makes the most of weak sun in the Spring and Autumn and seating space on the pavement outside. The waitress is very pleasant, helpful and speaks enough English to deal with most queries about the menu. Another little gem, their ice creams come from a local artisan, their lime (citron vert) sorbet/ice cream is remarkable; of course you don't have to take the vodka in the "coupe colonel". Enjoy.

We read on earlier reviews that you should not be put off by the exterior of this typical French bar/cafe/restaurant. That is right. We ate there this week and the food and service were first class. The patron was extremely welcoming and the waitress could not have been more helpful. Like all local bars the TV was on in the background, but as Saracens Rugby were beating Paris in the European Cup Final I could not complain. Although not many of the locals seemed to be enjoying it as much as me.We had steaks cooked on the open log fire, but the best dish was the lamb shanks, all served with the local speciality of white haricot beans cooked in duck fat. Excellent.Highly recommended for a local restaurant.

I met friends here for lunch, I think we all had the menu de midi which was very good, the waitresses were both friendly and helpful. We sat inside as although it was bright, it was chilly, we all commented that the meal was very good value. I will go back for sure.

Follow the blackbird (merle in French) to the Place du Château, Jarnacâs main square! With its stone façade and its bright red awning, the Restaurant du Château is a landmark of the town of Jarnac. For almost 10 years now, Ludovic Merle, (member of the âJe
We had lunch in this resturant on August 29,2018. Unfortunately it was an unpleasant experience. My wifehood huge piece of something whiten her meal. it was hard like a paper, she almost choked. She took it out from her throat and gave it to the waitress. She leaves and returns with an white onion and explains that it was an onion not paper. The question is if it was a piece of onion should it not have been chopped properly and not put in the dish with such a huge piece that it caused my wife to choke ? There was no apology from the chef or staff. Additionally in the toilet there was no door on the space where the urinal was located. Customers had to pass that area to wash their hands. very unethical. We also purchased a $42 bottle of wine that was very bitter.

Friends recently gave us a generous gift of a voucher for this restaurant. Having driven past it many times, and not been particularly attracted by the outside, I was interested to find out what it had to offer. The furniture is comfortable, the atmosphere good, service very friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. We shared the Black Angus beef, from the a la carte menu, with a great selection of vegetables. The red Sicilian wine was very good, and the dessert of very good quality, Superbe presentation. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening. There were a choice of menus, recommendations (including beef hung for 40 days!) and an amazing collection of Cognac. The 37⬠menu seemed good value for 5 courses and had recommendations for reasonable priced wine to go with it. We will return!
