Things to do in Gray

The lunchtime menu is short, cheap ( 10Euros for 2 courses) but very very good. The service was very friendly! We ordered also three pitchers (each 0.5l) of Rosé wine. In France the pitchers are normally the cheapest option to get nice wine with your meal (in the South West of France about 4-5 Euros/0.5l; in the middle of France 6-7 Euros/0.5l). This one was rather average. Big was the shock, when the bill shows 12 (twelve) Euros per 0.5l!!! We argued, especially as we could see the 10 liter boxes from next doors Intermarche (they sell 10 liters for 17 Euros) behind the counter. The landlord still tried to tell us we had been served "Vin superieur" (superior wine) and not "Vin ordinaire" and only took a couple of Euros off the bill. We shouldn't have paid, but we did. So should you ever stop over in Gray don't get ripped off by the landlord!!

This restaurant is especially good in fine weather being on the bank of the Saone, with two terraces. The food is well priced, especially the menu du jour, as is the wine at 9.80 for a very good Gascogne rose. The staff are very friendly, to the extent as we ate there three days running, they varied the menu just for us.Good choice apart from menu du jour from sandwiches at around 6 euros to a la carte for more. Menu du jour is 12euros80 for two big courses.

Its not easy to find an open restaurant on a Sunday in August in this area. This place was open.Good menu selection, decent enough wine list.£ of us ordered the steak with frites in different variations.Cooked perfectly, and the frites were home made, hot and crispy and fresh. Saw table beside us order a greek salad, it was huge (could be ordered as side or main)The lady who served us was very nice and very helpful.Desserts were a treat too.Really though it was great valueâ¬80 for 3 mains, 1 dessert and a bottle of wine that was â¬24. Would i stop here again-definitely

Trapped by the rising waters of the Saone, our two barges gratefully moored outside. A fine lunch and and plenty of good wine. Very friendly, great service, and good honest food. The best steak I have had in France. Dinner and lunch, well recommended.

5 of us went here from our barges which were moored on the river below the restaurant. We had not reserved and went at 9 pm .The place was very busy with a couple of big parties but there was a table. First surprise was the range on the menu as outside it says it is a pizzeria. For starter we had snails, smoked salmon, and fois grass. The ladies had chèvre salad which was proclaimed the best this voyage. The lamb shank was good and we all enjoyed the meal. Service was friendly and prompt.

Le Relais de la Prévôté is a bit tricky to find -the external signage is rather non-descript and the entrance not very inviting. However, the food was outstandingly good. The duck and chocolate fondant were exceptional!!! The Chef makes all his own sauces, reductions and vinegars -try the raspberry infused salad dressing -superb! Very good value at Euro 18.50 for 2 courses and 22.50 for 3 courses. We would visit again if passing through Gray.

This was one of the best meals we have experienced so far while travelling in the region. The restaurant exterior is unassuming but having read the reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to give it a try and were very glad we did. The interior of the restaurant is pleasant and the staff are welcoming. We visited on a Friday evening and the restaurant was busy. Service was prompt. The 24 Euro 3 course menu is really good value and includes an Amuse- Bouche. The regional salad starter was exceptional - good quality produce and generous portions.

Lets be honest... Gray is not really in any holidays itinerary except if you are cruising on the Saone... Quiet, a shadow of its past, you do not really know what to expect... And this restaurant perched in the surprisingly pretty (but not busy) old town is quite a surprise. The decor is very modern and trendy with its grey, brown and red colour scheme. Cosy even. There is not a lot of tables so you rather reserve ahead...The only thing is the temperature... We were there on a chilled august evening and it was allright. But I do not dare to imagine what it would be in a hot summer day/evening with no ac and no big window to open. The menu is quite original and daring in a way. There was no traditional beef on the set menu. If you do not like snails with your "volaille", or duck, you have to pay extra to pick up the "entrecôte" from the "à la carte" menu. There is also fish for a more light option. That is to say, it did not bother us but I am thinking to the no french tourists not used to our european cuisine and their ingredients...I had the goat cheese millefeuille and my husband the shrimps cocktail for starter. Then fish and duck. Very big portions. Nicely presented. On the bad side, the service is awfully slow. And the waitress is a bit like a bulldog chewing a wasp... All in all the experience was average. And not sure I would recommend this place if you have one meal in Gray...
