I visited the restaurant with our cycling club for an event in Ardres. Great place for a large group, food is fine and reasonably priced and quick service.

This family run bistro opposite the hotel de ville in the lovely little village of Ardres about 20 minutes outside Calais but could be a thousand miles away.Greeted with a bowl of water for Otik, the proprietor was very friendly and spoke good English to make up for our very poor French. We had the menu du jour which was 3 courses of well presented fresh and tasty plates for the very reasonable sum of 15 euros.Full of local people enjoying Monday lunch time, this place is worth the drive if you are in or around the Northern France region.It certainly won't be our last visit.

Depuis mon dernier passage l'établissement a bien évolué. Le repas est amélioré et l'ambiance est au top. des animations diverses et qui amusent la nombreuse clientèle qui devient de plus en plus fidèle.

This is an enchanting restaurant, wonderfully decorated and full of character. However, you do need to book ahead. The lunch menu was around E20 for three courses, and of course we had all three. The first was a tart, filled with a local strong cheese, onions and lardons (a bit like a quiche Lorraine, but don't say I said so). I had a shin of veal stew with purple potatoes and various veggies - very hearty and very delicious. I'm surprised I found room for desert but I have to 'fes up my partner and I shared a starter and a desert but had separate mains - it was the only way we could manage and I was very keen to have a desert as it was pain perdue - a favourite. You will probably need a sat nav to find it but it's really worth while. P.s. the owner speaks very good English and was realy helpful.

This is a delightful cafe with great views over the lake. There is outside and inside seating. Boats and pedalos can be hired. Service was good with plenty of choice on the inexpensive menu, including vegetarian dishes. Moule et frite was excellent and suited my mood as I was ending a trip across Europe. The sun was setting, casting changing reflections on the lake and birds were calling as they skimmed the lake for their supper of insects. Then the England match came on TV for my countrymen to enjoy. Peace and contemplation shattered it was time to leave and enjoy the last rays of daylight riding some of the delightful minor roads in the area.Approx 20 mins out of Calais on the road to St Omer you come to the village of Ardres. the lake is sign posted from there and La Fregate is easily found on the lakeshore where there are other restaurants too.

Little savoury biscuits & sliced soft bread while you read the menu. Wanted foie gras & it was beautifully done, generous slices with lovely crisp toast & nice fig jam. Duck magret large but not so good - skin not crisp, & despite perfect pink cooking rather chewy in places, & not really enough of the date & orange sauce to get its flavour. Interesting carrots, good tasty crushed potatoes with chopped chives on top. Chicory creme brulee a delight, good coffee with little biccy. Pleasant light ambience, excellent service. Good disabled loo, but no alternative to two steps up to entrance - I asked.

We ate here twice this time, both on our way to the UK and on the way back. It's still just as busy - reservations definitely necessary - but it's deservedly popular. As I said before, it's not hyper chic, and nor are the meals "gastronomic" but the quality, freshness and the taste are excellent and the prices are extremely low. We really appreciated details like fresh mushrooms in a sauce, and perfectly cooked salmon. Definitely worth a visit, including for the friendly, unassuming atmosphere and pleasant terrace in summer.

Attractive table setting with cloth napkins. The starter of tomatoes & mozzarella was a lot of slices, four different types & colours, three of them heritage & the Green Zebra particularly good. Little cheese balls & a pesto dressing completed a cool and tasty opening to the meal. The freebie was a nice little verrine. Only disappointment was the in-house bread, not as good as it has been, with a pale hard exterior & heavy dough. Main course - a lovely piece of skinless, boneless fish (lieu, which I particularly like) & lots of beautiful veg, including silky butternut puree, making a colourful plateful with so many well-defined flavours. Surprise du chef is one of the puds listed - so I asked to be surprised & I was, by a set of four lovely contrasting mini desserts, followed by very nice coffee. Pleasant ambience & view of the market place & there is a terrace if it is good outside sitting weather. Too hot my day there!

Wanting a light but warming lunch for a non meat eater we asked about soups but none available - they suggested their mushroom risotto, & what a treat it turned out to be. Surprise freebie starter of lovely slice of crusty bread with smoked salmon on garlic cream. The generous portion of risotto was perfect in every way & had a little garnish of veg - courgette, carrot, tomato, one lovely whole long flat bean & a trail of balsamic reduction to edge the dish. Chilled water in a glass bottle.Welcoming ambience, lovely food - I will return!

This modern brew-pub is a good place for large groups for informal dining. The menu is quite extensive with plenty to choose from and it is available in both English or French. They brew their own beers so there is also an interesting and original beer menu. We had a mixed meat platter to start and then I had the BBQ Ribs. Not the best ribs I've ever had (those were in the USA) but certainly tasty and filling. Service was good and prices were reasonable.
