Portsmouth Museum

Reviewed By Smasscher - East Sussex, United Kingdom

This is a lovely museum in a lovely building. The exhibits are well laid out, and unlike many other museums, the lighting is good enough that you can actually see them! The gallery on holidaying in the Portsmouth are were interesting and some of them were fun. The Sherlock Holmes exhibition is very good, I never knew there were so many books and how widely the character of Holmes was appreciated around the world. There was an art exhibition on and that was good too. The staff were lovely. The little cafe nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. And it is free entry! Amazing. Although we would have been happy to pay.

Portsdown Hill

Reviewed By ShaunL - Clanfield, United Kingdom

It’s a nice walk up on the hill taking in the views. Plenty of space to park if you avoid a sunny weekend. I parked on the north side just past the Churchillian pub. Walked some of the footpaths looking both north into the South Downs and south with the views across Portsmouth and the Solent. There is a lot of history up here notably the forts but the hill was heavily used during World War Two. Check out the Portsdown Tunnels web page for more info.

Free entry to an absolute treasure trove of guns, cannons, naval turrets etc set in a fort that's interesting in it's own right. All exhibits are well explained. Only very slight oddity was 2nd car park for museum says it is locked at 4.00pm an hour before museum closes.

Portsmouth Cathedral

Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Portsmouth, a geographical area including south-east Hampshire, Portsea Island and the Isle of Wight. For centuries this building, the Cathedral of the Sea, has watched, listened and helped the people of Portsmouth navigate the passage of time. It has witnessed war and peace, famous marriages, been bombed and rebuilt and remains a building of greatness and simple enduring beauty. More than this it is a vibrant and lively community set at the heart of the city and diocese of Portsmouth, responding to the call of God to meet people’s needs and equipping the whole diocese to share the love of God in Jesus Christ. ☩

Antiques Storehouse

A proper old school antiques and collectables shop. There is quite a focus on militaria, maritime and vintage toys but we try to cover as many areas as possible as the whim takes us. We are always buying from the public too at mutually fair prices. A lot of our stock is listed online and you can see it from links on the website.

The most interesting antique shop - I could spend days in that shop and still not have seen enough. It has everything from furniture, art, jewellery, antique toys, books, medals, weapons through to postcards.

Visited today and the church looked lovely in the sun. The grounds were very clean. The roof is missing due to the German bombings in 1941. It is a great piece of history that has been kept intact. Highly recommend a visit.

Southsea Rose Garden

Reviewed By bsandrs - Portsmouth, United Kingdom

With the Covid lockdown beginning to ease we visited the Rose Gardens which look superb at present with many of the varieties in full bloom. It was already a popular area in mid morning, but social distancing was being well maintained and visitors included couples, families and individuals. The planting and maintenance cannot be faulted and the many shades and strong perfumes are a delight. There are many seats around the site with full sun and shade options. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.
