Almenkerk Wine Estate

Almenkerk Wine Estate, in the cool Elgin Valley, is a real Family Estate; owned by the van Almenkerk Family and run by Natalie & Joris van Almenkerk. While Joris makes the wine - award winning wine -, Natalie does everything from sales & Marketing, PR and admin. Patriarch Joep helps out with sales, especially in his new restaurant De Brasserie in Strand, and acts as a mentor to the business side. Sisters Lieselotte & Annelies help with sales, tasting room and - of course - harvest (while juggling their studies and boyfriends). Next to that, we have a dedicated group of family & friends, local and overseas, who come out to help us during crunch time. Most importantly, though, do come visit us! Visitors to the Estate and our tasting room are increasing and - possible more importantly - returning to taste and buy some more. Life is beautiful on Almenkerk Wine Estate. We've been winning awards and medals. Some of them even for our cellar architecture! In any event, we consider our wines to be a form of liquid architecture.

We stumbled across this hidden gem in the Grabouw Winelands Area. Wow, what an experience! The staff are super friendly and know their product. The views of the valley are breathtaking and the wine is excellent! Well worth the trip out!

Iona Wine Farm

Coolest vineyard in Elgin, overlooking the Elgin Valley in the North and the Atlantic Ocean in the South, offering world class Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and our unique red blend, the One Man Band, a blend of 6 grape varieties. The Herbert Baker homestead is surrounded by a lovely garden and mature trees.

This was actually the closest winery to the Arabella Resort we are currently at for a week so we decided to call ahead and make sure they were open on a windy, rainy day that wiped out our golf plans. We were encouraged to visit and happened to run into the owner Andrew Gunn who talked to us for a few minutes even though he had a small scheduled group waiting for him downstairs. We then had a private tasting for two with a young hostess and enjoyed sips of the the 5 wines offered. Wow! Delicious and amazing. We bought two bottles for an in room supply and now wish we had purchased more. The 6 km over the well worn road is worth every bump. You will be warmly greeted and rewarded! Do not miss this place!

We walked this every day in Hermanus - amazing views of the bay and mountains and if you are fortunate you will see whales in October and November! It is a beautiful pathway or trail along the ocean and used by locals and visitors alike. It will feast your eyes and spirit!

The Makers Brew

Some of the best pizza around. Excellent beers with a selection for novice to serious stout types. Here you’ll find great hospitality, food that’s simplistic but not shy on flavor which mimics the excellent beers. Saison and Amber being a winner for me. Prices much like the rest of Barrydale are conservative rather than cosmopolitan. A must for the love of beer and a local brew (coffee too)

Agulhas National Park

Reviewed By bradowen27 - Saraland, United States

Just a short walk from the lighthouse is the southern most tip of Africa. With a great sculpture of Africa built at the point and maps and history of the area. See the dividing line where the Indian and Atlantic oceans collide and enjoy the beauty of the area. L'Agulhas is a quiet beachy town, a few seafood restaurants and some shops but enjoy the walks and views from the national park

Waenhuiskrans Caves

Reviewed By 269andreh - Cape Town, South Africa

Visited on 12-14 March 2021. We heard about this cave but did not realise it was so spectacular. Very easy to find as most locals hang out here as there is a small beach , quite a few walking trails & mountain biking opportunity. Some nice sand dunes to climb. The cave is only accessible at low tide by walking over the rocks so some footwear is advisable. We wore slops & it was fine. The entrance to get inside the cave is a small hole in a rock on your right as you walk towards the ocean. This gives you access to quite a big cave where you have amazing views of the ocean. You cannot access the cave from the ocean side as its a bit dangerous. Great photo opportunities within the cave and all the surrounding areas. If you have a 4x4 you can stop fairly close to steps to get down to cave area otherwise like most you park in the public area & walk , about a 10-15min on sea sand & there are signs showing the direction of the cave , the signs are a bit weather worn. The rock steps lead down to the ocean & you keep to the right walking towards the ocean. Definitely a must visit if in Arniston or surrounding areas

Grotto Beach

Reviewed By JPandTracy - Clanwilliam, South Africa

Grotto beach provided the wife, the kids and I with hours of entertainment on our Hermanus breakaway. The beach is a beautiful walking beach. It feels like it stretches all the way to Gansbaai, and is certainly long enough to awaken your appetite for ice cream and to build a need for a swim. The life guards were on duty at all advertised times and were quite attentive to the crowds on busy days. There's lots of space to accommodate everyone, with umbrellas and sun-loungers available for hire, and let's not forget the on-site ice-cream guy: he's a hero of the beach too! Watch the tides. Our children are still young, so when we forgot to check what was happening and walked into the waves as high-tide was pushing in, we soon felt the power of the ocean as it rolled us, kicking and spluttering, back on to the beach... All around: five stars.
