This church was originally built on the highest point in the city of Olinda in 1537. When the Dutch invaded in 1631, the church and much of the city was burned. It was rebuilt in 1676, when it was elevated to the status of a Cathedral.

Olinda worths a day-trip when you are in Recife and have some time to spare. I recommend to take a taxi/uber and start your visit from the Cathedral and then walk down the hill and aprecciate the archicteture , the local artist ateliers and the amazing view of the see.

If you are looking for high-end and top quality Brazilian handicraft items, you came to the right place. This is one of the most beautiful handicraft shops in Brazil. Such a variety of articles and colors! Spectacular clay works by famous popular artists! The building itself is already amazing. If you are visiting Olinda and its "Alto da Sé" historical quarter, don't miss "Artes do Imaginário Brasileiro". You will certainly love it! And prices are on the reasonable side. Enjoy!

Of the people and for the people, organizers argue that Olinda’s Carnival is the most democratic in the world, with more than 500 groups taking part in its parades, more than 100 performers wowing the crowds for free across its nine stages, and all ages, generations, and races represented. Olinda’s Carnival also benefits from its unique, picturesque setting — a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the fact that the best of its festivities take place during the day, lending it a particularly family-friendly vibe. Look out for the huge paper mache puppets amongst the paraders, as well as the infectious 'frevo' rhythms — both of these make Olinda a truly one-of-a-kind carnival experience!
Olinda, has hands down, one of the best street Carnivals in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is more of the Samba schoos (parades) along with blocos. But the vibe in Olinda is sooo friendly and warm! Great music, costumes and traditions! Incredibly beautiful town as well!
