Siri Gautama Sambuddharaja Maligawa (Grand Temple of The Gautama Buddha) is one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. This magnificent temple was completed in 2012 to honor Gautama Buddha celebrating the 2600th anniversary of his enlightenment. The temple was built through the great meritorious intentions and guidance of the most venerable Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero. The statues, paintings, carvings and all other art works in the temple were made exclusively by highly skilled Sri Lankan artists. As well, thousands of devotees connected to Mahamevnawa monasteries in the country and abroad gave their full financial and volunteer support. By placing the first stone the construction work of the grand temple was started on 6th February 2011 and the construction work was finished completely just in one year and five months. On 2nd July 2012 the temple was offered to Gautama Buddha and opened to the Public in a grand opening ceremony.
Having visited temples in countries like Thailand, Singapore, Austraila, I think these are unarguably the best modern day Buddha Statues. They have been crafted, highlighting the unique physical features of the Lord Buddha, hence being inside this temple building was truly a beautiful experience. Also, you if you get the time right, you may see hundreds of Buddhist monks going on alms round to the lunch area, at about 10.30 am. It is truly a marvelous sight to see so many Buddhist monks walking mindfully. If you are interested in learning a bit of Buddhist wisdom, You may also get a chance to talk directly with a practicing Buddhist monk. Overall it is a very spiritually enriching experience and one that I keep coming back to every time I visit Sri Lanka.

Our driver/guide Mr. Gamini picked up up from our hotel Ramada Inn Colombo on February 1st at 9 am and our journey in Sri Lanka started ! Next stop Chilaw to visit Munneshwara temple and Manavari Temple ! Colombo to Chilaw on expressway/E03, and Rt A3 is about1hr 30min about 73km ! The Munneshwaram temple is an important regional Hindu temple in Sri Lanka. It has been in existence at least since 1000 CE ! According to Wiki " The construction began in 10th century CE. The temple is one of the ancient Pancha Ishwarams dedicated to Shiva in the region !The temple complex is a collection of five temples, including a Buddhist temple. The temple was destroyed twice by the Portuguese colonial officers, who handed over the properties to the Jesuits. Although the Jesuits built a Catholic chapel over the temple foundation, locals reconstructed the temple both times, once in 1578 and again in 1623". The Temple is beautiful ! Worth a visit !

Modern day work of art on a grand scale. Lovely atmosphere helped by the resident monks and pilgrims from the south. They appear to be starting a rock sculpted Ganesh as well.

This beautiful place is not so well known, but it should be. Beautiful temple, great views and history and friendly people. We stayed for two nights at the temple and they treated us like kings. We even got to meet the highest monk. More people should visit this!
