Barskoon is a long valley with multiple attractions, but waterfalls are the first-ones you reach by comfortable dirt road (built and used for gold mine). There are multiple waterfalls at the beginning of the valley, and you may choose which part to visit based on your hiking experience. Hiking paths to waterfalls start at the parking lot, opposite to boulder with sculpture of Yurii Gagarin (soviet cosmonaut, who as others cosmonauts visited Issyk Kul resorts for rehabilitation). Slopes are quite steep and you should be careful when hiking to higher parts of the waterfall. You may visit the waterfalls at any season. They freeze during the winter.

I know the southern side of the lake is wilder, but I travelled from Balykchy to Tamchy on the northern side - the idea being to relax in a smaller place and swim a lot. It's quite something swimming in August in crystal-clear water with snow-covered peaks on both sides of the lake!

After an incognito 2020, i decided to do something adventurous in 2021 and wow what i start i had in Kyrgyzstan. I flew to Bishkek 0n 2nd feb and decided to visit places which are famous in summer but inaccessible by conventional ways in winter. My goal was to ride to the top of the song kul lake on a horse in a snowy and a bit dangerous mountain path. To fullfil my goal, i met with Aman, the owner of Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880). It took us 2 days to reach the top of the lake and the journey was mind blowing and hands down the best experience of my life !. The path was covered with snow and we had to often get down the horses to navigate them without stepping on ice which would break the horse leg ! The crisp winter breeze turned to extreme wind with temperatures well below negative 10 C. we had to climb over a mountain pass 3400 meters above sea level. The path after the pass was extraordinary and straight out of pictures i have seen of antartica ! wow what an experience it was! the lake was frozen and the ice thickness was well above 1.5 meters. if you can carry your skies along with you, it would be a great experience to ski there ! and best of all i was the ONLY tourist there !!!! can you believe it haha because in summer i think more than 100 K people visit this place !. Thank you Aman and Kyrgyz riders for such an amazing experience. Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880).

Toktogul Reservoir was formed in 1976 by a Soviet-built dam across the Naryn River. The reservoir is long and narrow and is the largest in Central Asia (284 square kilometers, averaging 215 meters in depth). Highway M41 (Central Asia Pamir Highway) follows the northeast and southern shores, from the town of Toktogul (where the Chychkan River empties into the reservoir) to the dam near Kara Kol. While driving along the south side of the reservoir, the views to the north are sublime. Turquoise green water reflects rugged mountains with reddish and purple rock strata. There are several pullouts along the road where one can follow a dirt track to the lake shore for a hike, picnic, swimming or fishing (carp, pike, and trout). All of these activities are available at the town of Toktogul where there are guesthouses, restaurants, cafes and horses for rent. At the other end of the reservoir, a concrete dam 215 meters high generates 1,200 MW of electricity, supplying the area with power. GE Hydro and GE Renewables recently announced a project to expand the generating capacity to 1440 MW. Some of the power and water goes to neighboring Uzbekistan.

Kol-Ukok lake can be seen from late May till early September. If you want to overnight at yurt camps near the shore of the lake then you have to come in July-August when some local people settle down this time. The weather is quite cold to settle down in May, June or even late August. The route: 2- hours from Bishkek to Kochkor, 5-10 min to Kara-Suu or Isakeev villages where riding or hiking to Kol-Ukok lake can be started. It takes 5-5.5 h to reach the lake on horseback (total distance), 6h on foot. If you come in May-June then it's 3.5-4h to get to yurt camp (riding) and 4-4.5h on foot. The path for riding is quite good since there is one way to go up and down to the village. I had a family with children, one of them was only 11 years old. They had a lot of fun during riding. If you want to experience of nomadic life and without any super conditions (sleeping on mattresses, no electricity, local food,no signal for calling and etc.) then you will like this place!

Great place for a picnic, or just spend some time soaking in the mountain views. We hiked to the waterfall and spent the afternoon enjoying the fresh mountain air.
