Herceg Novi (Montenegrin Cyrillic: Херцег Нови; pronounced [xěrtseɡ nôʋiː]) is a coastal town in Montenegro located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen. It is the administrative center of the Herceg Novi Municipality with around 33,000 inhabitants. Herceg Novi was known as Castelnuovo ("New castle" in Italian) between 1482 and 1797, when it was part of Ottoman Empire and the Albania Veneta of the Republic of Venice. It was a Catholic bishopric and remains a Latin titular see as Novi. Herceg Novi has had a turbulent past, despite being one of the youngest settlements on the Adriatic. A history of varied occupations has created a blend of diverse and picturesque architectural style in the city.

The medieval orthodox monastery complex situated next to the city, on a hill in the lush Mediterranean vegetation. It is composed of the Great Church, the Small Church and the Temple of Saint Sava, which was built, according to belief, by Saint Sava in the 13th century.
We walked to this Monastery and really enjoyed the history it represented and the care that has been given to it to keep it looking pristine. The entire region of Boka Bay is full of Monasteries high up in their hills and not easy to get to but Savina Monastery is easily accessible on foot. We recommend that you walk up the staircase on the right of the Monastery because about half way up you will find a clearing which gives you a fantastic aerial view of the Monastery and the western part of Boka Bay

This green zone connects Herceg Novi with Meljine. Long forest paths in the shadow of oleanders, pines, cypresses, oaks and other tree species lead to the enchanting viewpoints offering unforgettable views on the Boka Bay.

This is one of the most attractive swimming and picnic areas in Herceg Novi which, during the season, can be easily reached by tourist boats. The beach, covered in white pebbles, long over 300m and wide even to 15m, is surrounded by thick Mediterranean vegetation and protected by the Arza reef from the impact of strong waves.

This wonderful promenade along the sea shore is 6 kilometres wide and connects Igalo and Meljine. It is constructed on a spot where the railway tracks used to be, and got its present name after five women heroes, who died in the Second World War. They were all called Danica.

Known also as the City Tower, it is one of the symbols of Herceg Novi. It is situated in the western part of the Old Town, and its main feature is the clock, which was replaced with an electric one in the mid-nineties of the last century.

Amazing place to enjoy a drink. Local beer is brewed here and other kinds are available. Nice music too. No food is served. I wish it is smoke-free! Some customer friendly attitude is needed here, but still my favorite!

Nice old town with 3 fortresses inside in Boka Kotorska Bay. City is famous for its staircases connecting sea promenade with upper town. Nice old houses and atmosphere. Only thing missing are beaches, they are small and concrete.

The old drinking fountain Karaca (XVI – XVII) is conveniently located in one of two Old Town's main squares: Trg Herceg Stejpana (also known as Belavista Square), near the Orthodox church of Michael the Archangel. Once, it was one of the most important drinking fountains in the town. Nowadays, from the stone fountain flows a very strong stream of water. The name comes from a spring that have been supplying the city with water for centuries. The carved marble column is simple and small but lovely. The fountain itself features Gothic, Byzantine and Romanesque styles harmoniously combined. All in all, good location (in the heart of the Old Town). Well kept. Nice surroundings. Walkable distance to other sights. There are restaurants, cafes, shops, banks and a lot more close by. Worth a peek.
