Forth & Clyde Canal

This was the first canal built in Scotland, which stretches 35 miles from the village of Bowling on the River Clyde to the town of Grangemouth on the River Forth.

Great to take to the canal for a walk or cycle. Canals run between glasgow and edinbugh, change over canals at the falkirk wheel. Lovely and peaceful away from all traffic. Also see some lovely canal animals/birds. Love taking to the canals.

Callendar House

For 6 centuries, through wars, rebellions and the industrial revolution, Callendar House has played host to many great historical figures: Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie.Costumed interpreters bring history to life: sample authentic Georgian food, listen to stories about life below stairs, and watch the kitchen staff go about their daily tasks. Callendar Park has wonderful extensive grounds and woodlands and a lovely wee loch with seats around it which are ideal for enjoying a picnic. After our walk in the colourful autumn woods we went to the House, once a private residence, for lunch in the upstairs restaurant with the impressive original fireplace and beautifully decorated ceiling. The whole experience was most enjoyable with all covid regulations met and charming staff. Lunch was delicious and afternoon teas are available by booking online. The museum part of the house is on several levels from the basement kitchen upwards through the oak staircase and charts the progress of the area from Roman to modern times. Toilets are spacious, wheelchair friendly and clean and there is a small shop on exit. Check online to find opening times and more information.

Muiravonside Country Park

Reviewed By JoanScotland - Edinburgh, United Kingdom

I have been visiting Muiravonside Country Park for years - at least since 2002 - taking the grand-children to visit the excellently run far and to the play area. But really the best thing is just to get them out into the open air and running around. It has improved out of all recognition during these years and the farm is spotless with excellent informatioin boards, there are walkways around the fields so that you can get closer to the animals, there is an orchard area and allottment so that they can learn where their food comes from. The cafe is well run and the food we had yesterday was absolutely fresh and home-made - and cheap! Couldln't have been more impressed. It's understandable that they can't keep the cafe open for long hours - it's a country park after all and visitor numbers could be greater. The thing is that the park is free of charge and it's a very valuable asset in the area.

The Pineapple

Visited today and stone architecture of this building is stunning. Set in a quiet walled garden with beautiful colourful flowers and plants typical of a countryside estate. Perfect for a picnic or peaceful time for reflection, painting or reading. Or a walk around the forest path. Small car park to park up and a couple of benches to sit on in the magnificent walled garden. Well worth a visit.
