Famous as the home of Yankee Stadium, elevated trains, and dense apartment blocks, the Bronx is also the greenest of New York City's boroughs. Visit the gorillas at the famous Bronx Zoo or wander through the 50-acre forest at the New York Botanical Garden. Pick up some gourmet foods on Arthur Avenue, the Bronx's Little Italy, and have a picnic at Van Cortlandt Park, which features two square miles of boating, horseback riding, tennis, and the oldest public golf course in the United States.

Island off the east coast of the Bronx that transforms into a seaside resort on weekends during the summer.
I have visited City Island pretty much bi-weekly...the atmosphere, its tranquility, as you are 'transported' to a community sorrounded by water, makes you feel as though you're in Cape Cod...in a boating & fishing community. In this fishing village, you must visit shops like "Captain Mike's Diving" you can learn scuba diving, book fishing excursions, and so much more. It has been at that location for over 27 years!...learning its history alone is mind boggling. ...and eateries like "The Lobster Box", Sammy's Fish Box", "Ohana Japanese Restaurant" are awesome. The church, the school, & businesses...its community is not harried like us on the other side of the City Island bridge...when you go, visit the little mom and pop businesses, where you can buy trinkets, your worms or tackle for fishing or wolf down dessert at the "Black Whale", and stop there, if only to gaze at a very old gnarled tree on its corner. A beautiful place!

Occupying more than 400 acres in the Bronx, this cemetery is known for the ornate and imaginative mausoleums and monuments of some of the country's most famous industrialists and politicians. Notable individuals include Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz, Irving Berlin, Herman Melville, and many more. Guide maps are available at both cemetery entrances.
When you arrive at the main gate there is an office you can go into and get a map. On the map is where all the famous and interesting people are buried. They also have an app for your phone. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Van Cortlandt Parkis the third largest New York City Park with 1,146 acres. Over half of the Park is forested and it has the largest freshwater lake in the borough. There is a lot of history in the Park: - It contains the Bronx's oldest building, the Van Cortlandt House built in 1748-49. The Park has the oldest municipal golf course in the United States, the Van Cortlandt Golf Course, founded in 1895. -It has a National Historic Landmark trail, the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which travels the route of the city's original water tunnel. Inside VCP is a cross-country running course with a national reputation. Every year, the rugged course hosts the national cross-country championships as well as the Manhattan College Invitational for high school students throughout the U.S.
Love the trails here for a run. The cross country course is challenging and beautiful. You will not be disappointed.

Best small Italian food shops and restaurants around. Very good pizza at Full Moon, great pastries at Artuso's Pastry, great cheese and delicacies at Casa Della Mozarella, delicious homemade pasta and ravioli at Borgatti, wonderful Italian bread at Terranova Bakery. An enjoyable day going from one shop to another checking out all the great food.

This city park has a variety of habitats including forests, meadows, mixed scrub, salt marsh and a stretch of saltwater coastline, which makes this an excellent place for hiking, birdwatching and viewing wildlife.
I took the train here from Manhattan on a whim and very glad I did it. It took me less than an hour to get there and it was beautiful and peaceful. Nice park to walk around or go running or picnic in. Very easy to get to from the train.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents innovative contemporary art exhibitions and education programs and is committed to promoting cross-cultural dialogues for diverse audiences. Since its founding in 1971, the Museum has played a vital role in the Bronx by helping to make art accessible to the entire community and connecting with local schools, artists, teens, and families through its robust education initiatives and public programs.
We loved the show about graffiti and Henry Chalant. What an excellent setup - loved the combination of music of the time, the moving images and sounds of the trains (oh how I remember!) and the journals, poems of artist, the photos. Also wonderful video showing the original artists all grown up now and reflecting on their experiences. Top notch show and a wonderful community resource. And free! Amazing.
