The Wildlife & Forts of Berry Head Trail

Reviewed By Jannerbloke - Devon, United Kingdom

Came up here for a few hours with the dog. Easy parking, well maintained footpaths and information boards. Panoramic views, dramatic cliffs and on our day bright blue sea, clear to an horizon, many miles away. Many well preserved battlements, a few cannon. Well defined moats and some appropriate modern foot bridges across them. Lots of protective fencing to keep dogs and children from falling from the near sheer cliff edges. At worst, very gentle inclines on a few paths.

The Brixham Steam Packet Company

Visit The Brixham Steam Packet Company and experience the opulence and splendour of turn of the century steam ship travel in this fabulous gem of a shop which also incorporates the very popular Chart Room First Class Coffee Lounge. This cafe and marine collectables shop is just off the main shopping street near the harbour in Brixham, just up a back alley opposite the co-op. I suspect many people pass it by with no idea it is there. But if you are looking for lunch or coffee and cake then you definitely shouldn't pass by! It is very good. Full of marine collectables and memorabilia from liners, and our food and drink was spot on in every respect. The coffee lounge is kitted out in full-on nautical style, without being kitsch, and we found this environment very likeable. We had a couple of crab salads and hot drinks this lunchtime. They didn't bat an eyelid when we varied the order to exclude the usual granary bread. The food was really good, a likeable and varied salad, the crab was well presented in a little pot and absolutely fresh, piece of lemon, mayo and separate french dressing if you want it. Light lunch size, so set your expectations accordingly. Tea and coffee were well presented, and good quality, with separate little jugs for hot or cold milk as you choose. All for £20 for two, which for something of this quality would not be bettered anywhere I think. Find an excuse to visit the loo - as well as walls full of old marine communications kit, there is a wryly amusing looped speech from a liner captain. We didn't try the cakes, but the pieces going past us to other customers were very large. Service is very well handled, friendly and efficient. Dogs are welcome. Be aware of the opening hours - the cafe is just at lunchtime 10-2. Closed Sundays, and on Saturday they just do tea and cake. And although we went to the coffee lounge, there is an adjoining marine memorabilia section, that is a specialist shop in its own right. Serious pieces, at prices set at a level for those who are happy to spend a good bit on some characterful items.

The Wine Loft Brixham

Reviewed By 56lind - Brixham, United Kingdom

We were recommended to go to the wine loft by friends who know the owners and we weren’t disappointed. Claire and her husband are incredibly knowledgeable about wine, I still dream about the Tasmanian pink champagne! We had such a great time we bought vouchers for my sister and brother-in-law to treat themselves and they too had a beautiful evening. Really different wines to try buy the glass and buy to take home as well as tasty Tapas, cheese, hams and olives. Their Covid routines make you feel very safe as well as warm and hospitable. This is a lovely place for a treat as well as just a pop in before you go home for supper in the evening. If you’re in Brixham a nearby, this is not to be missed.

Brixham Heritage Museum was delighted to be awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2015, the third year running, thank you all for making this possible! We were also joint winners of the Family Friendly Museum Award in 2013,despite nationwide competition. We offer a choice of activities which are suitable for a variety of ages, and we hold many 'special days' both within and outside of our Museum. There are opportunities to become amateur archaeologists, no matter how young, and many other "hands-on" experiences are found on both floor levels inside the building. For all visitors there are a variety of displays ranging from the prehistoric to the 1950s, with particular emphasis on the maritime industry of the area. As someone who has been to hundreds of museums, this one is excellent. A Tardis-like gem, it has a wide variety of exhibits which are well presented. The text panels have just the right amount of detail. Children also seemed to be engaged by various objects on display. In COVID times, they have installed an easy-to-follow one way system, and they limit guest numbers on entry.

Berry Head National Nature Reserve

This stunning headland, with its iconic lighthouse and Napoleonic Fort, is surrounded by water on three sides and offers exceptional views across Torbay and beyond. You can enjoy some superb coastal walks, spot wildlife on land and at sea, or simply relax in the award-winning Guardhouse Café. Our Visitor Centre will tell you all about the Reserve, its history, wildlife and the work of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. Do check for opening times during off peak season. This is a must-visit day out and is either a pleasant walk from up from Brixham or short drive to the visitor car park. Dogs are very welcome throughout the site; leads are required in certain areas. Disability access is good with tarmac or laid paths into both the North and South Forts.

Popped in to look at the pictures and ended up coming home with one. It is so unusual for the two of us to agree that when we did we had to buy it and it looks beautiful hung at home now. Family business with very informative, passionate and helpful people who made the visit more than a browse around. Lovely view of the harbour too.

I found this place on Tripadvisor and got very lucky that the day we were traveling it was open. Since it was February we were able to park right across from it in the holiday lets car park, though this probably isn't advised! There is parking up the road with a short walk downhill to the battery. Inside its chock full of interesting items and weapons that you can actually get your hands on! The volunteers really make this place though. They are friendly, full of knowledge and charismatic and bring history to life. It's not a big place but there is a lot to look at, I'd say an hour or a little more would be enough time to see everything. Inside. it's flat and accessible, so it's suitable for anyone that might have access issues to explore and a lot of the items have descriptions in large text. They also do full open days, I plan to come back to see one but it's worth going when they are open in general too, don't wait! It's great for all the family, especially because you can get hands-on, even if you're not an enthusiast for the subject their passion is contagious.

Shoalstone Pool

Shoalstone Sea Water Pool is an iconic feature of the South Devon Coast, being one of only a few remaining sea water pools in the country. Open May to September each year, with lifeguards on duty from 10am to 6pm every day, the 50m outdoor seawater pool is the perfect place to relax, take a dip and enjoy the fantastic views of Torbay. Facilities include a car park, changing rooms, outdoor shower, lockers and sunloungers or deckchairs to hire. Nearby there’s a kiosk and also Shoals Cafe for drinks and food to eat in or take away. (These are independent of the pool.) The pool is run by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by the local community. There is no entry charge, but we ask for a voluntary donation of £2 per swim or £5 per family to help cover our running costs. Occasionally the pool will be closed for cleaning or for special events – please check our social media channels for up-to-date information. We do not have a contact phone number. We look forward to seeing you!
