An interesting activity to experience on a visit to Sri Lanka is cooking a typical local meal at Dil's Sri Lankan Kitchen, where Dilmani, Sri Lankan mom and hostess, will share her knowledge on the art of Sri Lankan home-cooking. You will be familiarized with the components of a typical Sri Lankan meal, how to balance various flavours, colours, and textures of local ingredients, and how to bring out their best features, using different cooking methods. You will also learn about blending various spices and herbs to create the unique taste of Sri Lankan cuisine. Feel the salty breezes mixed with fishy odours. Experience the raw intensity of the action. Perhaps you might like to pick up your favourite sea food, to be cooked and enjoyed later in the day at Dil’s Sri Lankan kitchen.

Loved our cooking class with Yamuna today. The class itself was informal, relaxed and informative. We learned how to make coconut milk from scratch as well as cooking a variety of different curries, dahl, rice and coconut sambal. Each element/curry was slightly different and the finished meal was incredible. Some of the best curries we’ve eaten in Sri Lanka (and we’ve been here a month) as well as one of the best dahls. One highlight for us was being able to go to the market with her cousin, who was lovely, to buy the vegetables and fish. We were able to choose whichever vegetables we liked which was great because it meant we got to try some more unusual curries such as banana and mango. We also got to make a fibre root salad as well, an ingredient we hadn’t seen on a menu but very local so we wanted to try. Yamuna was very friendly and you could tell really enjoyed teaching about Sri Lankan cooking... she must do since she’s been doing cooking class for 10 years now! She was also very open to chat with us about culture and her town of Unawatuna which we found fascinating. The kitchen space was also really nice to work in, it was semi outdoors but very clean and well organised. All in all, very good experience and very much recommended to tourists and travellers!

I am Olivier, I settled in Sri Lanka, 3 years ago after making many round trips. I live in Colombo, the capital where my wife is native. I became fond of this city complicated to capture and not necessarily very "sexy" at first glance. I learned to know these nooks and crannies, off the beaten track and away from tourist attractions.

Traditional Sri Lanka food is very enjoyable and world famous, but cooking it yourself adds yet another dimension to the experience. We do cooking classes in Kandy at a house located in quiet residential areas just outside the city. Each day of the week there are different menus on training, reflecting the cultural and culinary traditions of Sri Lanka,
Book this cooking class! We had one day in Kandy and wanted to experience the market, a locals home and learn to cook some amazing traditional Sri Lankan food. This was the perfect opportunity! We were picked up from our hotel by tuk tuk (an experience in itself!) and taken to the market. The chef walked us through and explained all the different vegetables and its uses to us. Asked us what we like and what we don’t so he could cater the meal to our taste. We visited a spice stall and learned about the different spices and teas and bought a few to take home for ourselves and gifts. We then went by tuk tuk through the hills of Kandy to Sudesh’s home. There we met his kids and wife and the chef started to prepare the meal. He taught us along the way and we made 7 different vegetables, egg curry, chicken curry, lentils, papadam and an amazing sauce with fried eggplant and onions and curry leaves. We then enjoyed the delicious meal with a local beer and topped the meal off with a yummy pancake filled with caramelized coconut. Sudesh and his family are lovely and welcoming. It was an amazing experience and one I highly recommend to anyone visiting Kandy!
