The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

Thank you very much for finding our small cooking class in Kyoto, Japan. The class is not only about cooking, but learning about Japanese culture. We will do our best to share all that we can about our culture; we sincerely hope you enjoy it.
Taro is extremely knowledgeable about Japanese cuisine, history, culture, customs and traditions and is a great conversationalist. He lived in US and knows a lot about the Western culture. I know better understand Japanese culture and way of cooking. We made a few vegetarian dishes that were delicious and are so easy to make at home. I did a cooking class in Thailand, but I loved Taro's approach, menu and setting way better. I would highly recommend the class.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND this wonderful cooking class We were welcomed with hot tea after putting on home slippers by Midori San. This was very welcome as it was raining outside. We had trouble finding the cooking studio. We called Midori San and she came out to guide us. It’s in a gully - just off the main road - a 1 minute walk..She was not feeling well but she worked so hard and kept going and made us feel SO welcome! It was very interesting to see a Japanese cooking studio with everything you need in limited space! -Excellent teaching in easy to understand English. -we learned to make tempura(she prepped all the veggies and shrimp in front of us and showed us how to make the batter) gyoza(she prepared the filling in front of us and we stuffed and made gyozas ready) - she fries the tempura and gyozas because of hot oil risk but it’s right there and we watched and saw each step, and took video and saw color changes etc. Makisushi roll Miso soup - we had limited time so she showed us the ingredients and went over how to make it and then we drank it - so yummy and fresh! Japanese salad She explained all the sauces and we tasted all of them - light, dark, sweet soy sauce, light and dark vinegar, ponzu sauce, Mirin, cooking sake. We have 3 teenage daughters who watch a lot of cooking shows. They learned so much and had so much fun! Midori San is patient, smiling and explains so well and such a gracious host. Loved the whole experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

My daughter and I attended this amazing class whilst staying in Kyoto. We were looking for a unique experience where we could learn how to make a range of dishes (e.g. homemade tofu) rather than just the typical go-to options and we certainly found what we were looking for! Sasha and Mizue were lovely, welcoming hosts who created a personal experience that we will always remember. We learnt not only a range of recipes/techniques, but also the history behind what we were dealing with, as well as their personal stories. We would highly recommend this course for its super friendly hosts, delicious food and great value. Thank you Sasha and Mizue!

Let’s make Japanese pretty rolled sushi together! Rolled sushi has been made for Japanese festivals or home party from long time ago. Originally it was simple sushi with toasted laver, but Japanese house wife created the new pretty rolled sushi which fits with the times. Cutting them, we can find pretty cross sections like flowers, animals and so on. I’m sure your party will be lively and happy if you serve this sushi at home!
