Top 10 Ferries in Yucatan Peninsula, Yucatan Peninsula

January 27, 2022 Kiesha Cripe

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkelling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatanâs native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water. Bike around the ruins and hop between towns in colectivo vans.

We took this ferry from Playa Del Carmen over to Cozumel on a Sunday. The seats are very comfortable. We got a table against the window. There is a coffee bar and a small beverage bar with beer, water and soda. Craft departed on-time for both legs of the trip and there were no delays or issues. Do NOT purchase your tickets from the myriad of vendors on the street (5th Avenue). There are company owned kiosks right in front of the pier and there are no long lines, etc.

The best way to get to Isla Holbox. You can travel on the top enjoying the sea breeze, or in the cabin in reclining seats and air conditioning. In approximately 20 minutes you will arrive comfortably safe to your destination.

This is the ferry service that takes you from Chiquita to Holbox It takes 15 minutes each way, and runs once every 30 minutes. There are a variety of different boats but this is the fastest, and most comfortable with an upper deck that you can sit on during the journey

We had flown in to Cancun and rode the ADO bus down from there to PDC where we caught the Ultramar Ferry over to Cozumel where we had rented an airbnb from Pancho near the Ocean Beach Club(absolutely the best host we have ever had and great place to stay). The tickets are available right at the dock, don't get distracted by the others who try to sell you tickets to the ADO bus or Ultramar Ferry...go right to the ticket booth...very easy and affordable. The ride is great and the staff is very professional and accommodating. Traveled via Ultramar when going on a Chitzen Itza tour later in the week as well...great trip and ride. Food and drinks are available.

We took the Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres for the day. What a fun little trip. Enjoyed the Ferry ride, and it was really cool how they took your groups picture before you boarded, and then you had the opportunity to purchase copies if you chose to do so.

From Punta Venado, also referred to as Calica (15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen), this ferry travels between the mainland and Cozumel in approx 1hr and 40 min (if you include the time to board and leave the ship). You can book in advance through the internet at the latest by 48 hours before the trip. We rented a car and you should check if it is allowed with the car agency provider. It is well organised and professionally run by experienced crew. There are waiting lounges with basic services at the terminals and security is great. (You need to provide the car registration number for a booking). For 4 persons and a car you will pay 500 MXN which I am sure is cheaper that the fast boats and you additionally have the transportation ready while in Cozumel (where people drive more relaxed than in the mainland). They are considerably bigger boats so they are not as fast, but with such a view, who cares! Ultramar also has the same service and they depart in a similar schedule, but either later och earlier. In total, on week days you can choose between six departures. Sundays has less departures.

Winjet Fast Ferry

Reviewed By G4387SJhelenf

For spring break we decided to see our friends south of Cancun for a week, but wanted to dive Cozumel first. So I looked into the easiest way to get there. We ordered a driver from US transfers, who had beer for us, cost $60 he drove us to playa del Carmen. Showed us where the ferry terminal was, we paid for the fast 45 min ferry, had a margarita whilst sitting outside listening to a lovely lady singing. Yes our holiday had begun, at the other end super short walk to a cab, hopped in the cab to our hotel. From landing in Cancun to our hotel in Cozumel and meeting up with our friends it was under 3hrs. Super easy and super efficient and fun, when you get to the ferry they take your bags and give you a claim ticket just like the Airlines, except you don’t pay for it. I highly recommend the ferry, when we return in two years I will do the exact same trip again. Enjoy.
