High Weald Dairy run popular 1 day cheese making courses and cheese dairy tours for groups of 4-15 people. The courses will teach you to make cheese using simple equipment often available in the kitchen. It is a very much hands on course, feeling the changes that occur turning milk into curds and whey and finally cheese. During the day we have a tour of the dairy, to see how cheese is made on a larger scale. Cheese is available to purchase directly from the dairy during the week, please call first if you plan to come at the weekends, as we are not always available. Booking in advance is advised.
We have bought a number of varieties of High Weald Cheese over the years and decided to go to an Introduction to Cheesemaking. It was a good decision. We received a warm welcome from Sarah on arrival. Chris and Gary led us through a whistle-stop day of soft and hard cheesemaking. The day included a tour of the dairy, cheese tasting and an excellent lunch (thank you Gary). As there were two of us on the course we came away with around 1kg of hard (cheddar style) cheese to mature at home, 8 pots of various flavoured soft cheese, some halloumi and about ½ litre of whey for use in baking. We couldn’t fault the day. Sarah, Chris and Gary provided a great experience, an insight into the ethos of High Weald Dairy and an excellent introduction to the art of cheesemaking.

March - Mid April we have 800 ewes lambing and 80 Cows calving so come and see a real working farm and take the tractor ride to the top of the downs to see the ewes and lambs out in the fields. Through the summer we have trips around the farm lasting over 1 hour to see the animals, crops and conservation areas.

Plaw Hatch Farm is a biodynamic farm on the edge of the Ashdown Forest in Sussex near East Grinstead, with a farm shop selling organic and biodynamic vegetables, meat from heritage and rare breeds, dairy products (raw milk, cheese, cream, yoghurts), as well as dried goods, wine, and organic wool. The farm focuses on community-based, small-scale, regenerative agriculture.
My friend who stayed in East Grinstead drove us to this biodynamic farm. Biodynamic is similar to organic but biodynamic practices create healthier plants and heal the earth by replenishing the soil and adding vitality to the plant, soil and/or livestock. Firstly we visited the shop on the farm where we bought the raw milk, large goose egg, duck egg, sourdough spelt bread. The shopkeeper kindly kept these in a cool place while we toured the farm. Plaw hatch farm is a mixed farm with a dairy herd providing raw milk, cheeses, yoghurts and cream. They provided us with a map/brochure to cover the large farm of 200 acre at the edge of Ashdown Forest which is well known for its Poohstick Bridge and Pooh Corner. There are many farm animals like chicken, pigs, cows and sheep to look at. A range of seasonally available fruit and vegetables sold in the shop comes from the 12 acre garden. We also saw a round house where wood work course was conducted. Camping here is also allowed and prices are £12 per adult per night and £6 per child per night.

Within the 3000 sq feet tropical flight area we have created an environment which is carefully controlled and monitored to ensure perfect conditions for our live butterflies. The high temperature and humidity is created not only for the hundreds of tropical butterflies, but to also sustain the tropical plants and flowers needed to enable the butterflies to feed, breed and lay their eggs. The habitat of the butterflies has been reconstructed at our butterfly farm in such a way as to allow visitors an insight into the fascinating way of life of these amazing insects.
What a beautiful place! Myself, my husband and our two daughters (aged 9 and 7) spent a wonderful hour here. When we first walked in, I thought it was a bit small and wondered how we would fill the time, but actually the time flew and we were all reluctant to leave once the hour was up. We saw so many stunning butterflies and moths - they were all amazing. The member of staff was really helpful and knowledgeable so we all learnt loads. An added bonus was the balmy 30 degree heat: a welcome burst of summer on a grey, winter day. We will definitely be returning.

Washbrooks is a family run farm located at the base of the South Downs in the pretty village of Hurstpierpoint. We have a large animal barn and paddocks with all your favourite farm animals. Our extensive outdoor play area offers hours of play as well as an indoor play area for rainy days. The tearoom offers home cooked food everyday from 9.30am - 4pm. See our website for seasonal attractions. We are closed between Christmas Day and New Year Day.
We have been here twice now this year and would definitely go back again. Washbrook farm is a lovely place to go for a family day out, the main animal barn has plenty on animals including baby guinea pigs, rabbits, ponies, horses, donkey’s, chickens, ducks, goats and sheep. We took our toddler on the tractor ride where you could see even more animals, this was a lovely activity. There are lots of play equipment for a variety of ages including a small soft play area. The tea rooms offer great food, good choice and very well priced. They do have a picnic area as well so you can take your own picnic. I would highly recommend Washbrooks farm as a day out, the animals are very well cared for and a lot of thought has gone into creating a great place to enjoy.

All the ingredients used in our tearooms come from our newly built farm shop. So whether you want to relax with a coffee and one of our fresh homemade cakes; enjoy a late breakfast or catch up with friends over lunch, you can be assured of the quality and freshness of everything we serve. You can relax and unwind in an informal atmosphere while enjoying the surrounding South Downs National Park.
I visited Wayfield Park Farm shop with my husband after reading a post on Facebook...I didn’t know this cafe existed! We both opted for the Farmhouse breakfast, one big & one regular with a flat white coffee each. All I can say is that the breakfasts were DELICIOUS, all the ingredients were tasty, well cooked and beautifully presented & good value for money. The staff were friendly and polite and welcomed us and our dog. Next time we will take our children too, as they offer great food choices in a relaxed environment. We will definitely be back very soon!
