Celebration of Light

One of the most spectacular firework displays in the world, accompanied by music so the colored lights look like they're dancing to the rhythm, takes place over the English Bay in Vancouver at the end of July. Over three nights, international teams compete in the Celebration of Light, watched by more than a million spectators enjoying the world’s longest-running offshore fireworks competition, which sparked into life in 1990. You can buy tickets to enjoy the show at three designated venues or simply head for the beach or other viewpoints, where you'll enjoy a fabulous view and make a day of it before the fireworks get cracking at 10pm. Good places to watch the fireworks are English Bay or Kits Points, followed by Sunset Beach and Stanley Park.

We were a little nervous trekking all the way out on the last day of the festival but the experience was not tainted! There were still thousands of beautifully bloomed tulips and some delusions fresh wildflower honey from the cutest farm stand! Thanks to the sun and a plethora of swings and spots for pictures we got some excellent pictures for the gram! Pet and disability friendly, they even had little booties for the dogs. Already looking forward to next season!

Our first visit to the Vancouver Christmas Market was really enjoyable. The weather was warm and dry and the crowds not overwhelming. Compared to our trip last Christmas to four of Europe's largest Christmas Markets the Vancouver market was much more fun. Definitely not to be missed.

Chilliwack Sunflower Festival

Reviewed By PookyCake - Victoria, Canada

The Chilliwack Sunflower Festival hit the Fraser Valley with quite a splash in the summer of 2018. Featuring 35 different varieties of sunflower over 20 acres, the Festival provides visitors with a plethora of sunflowers for as far as the eye can see. With so many different heights and shades of yellow, it’s little wonder that people have come from all over the Lower Mainland and even Washington State to view these golden flowers that worship the sun. Indeed, with such buzz it is hardly surprising that the Chilliwack Sunflower Festival was subsequently covered at length by various media, including: Global BC, CTV, the Chilliwack Progress, Monte Cristo Magazine, The Cascade, Narcity, Georgia Straight, Vancouver is Awesome, the Daily Hive and Vancouver Sun. Their coverage only helped this fledgling festival gain in popularity. Come 2019, the organizers of this new but already popular festival set out to one-up themselves. “What else could we do,” they asked, “to make this event a must see for the summer?” Their answer was simple: Maintain the beautiful wall of sunflowers, but add in a bit more in terms of colour. Thus, some lovely dahlias – in 54 varieties and hues – were added as well as a number of large pumpkins. The end result of these efforts was an even more immersive experience for the whole family to enjoy. Now, not only could one get lost in that awesome wave of yellow, but they could also admire the dahlias and take that perfect selfie or Instagram photo. As I ambled through the giant sunflower blooms, I couldn’t help but think of William Blake’s important poem, “Ah! Sunflower:” Who countest the steps of the sun / Seeking after that sweet golden clime / Where the traveller’s journey is done. These three lines are simple in their execution, but deceptively complex in their meaning. In that respect, they beautifully capture the essence of what one feels walking through Chilliwack’s Sunflower Festival: We admire the physical beauty of the sunflower while concomitantly realizing that these giants hint at the subtleties of human nature; that is to say, like them, we pine after the distant sun (desire). Such philosophical musings certainly makes you think! That said, the Chilliwack Sunflower Festival is a thing of beauty and should be visited by all. Come here, enjoy the flowers and make wonderful family memories to last a lifetime. Now, view the attached photos and get a glimpse of what these fields hold.
