So not thinking through well enough we ended up driving to Volterra one of these long weekends when Italians love to go and enjoy there own magnificent attractions such as this beautiful little etruscan town. Queing up for parking, people everywhere but in good spirit. So knowing from experience we decided to grab a lunch place just before 1 pm not risking everything is full. 15 minutes all restaurants are crowded. Ombra della Serra just a mid range place in one of the busiest streets. They could get good business just by location. But ambitions in kitchen is quite high, and the staff is so nice despite the rush. It is admirable to keep the standard, not becoming a tourist trap.

After driving up unfamiliar winding hilly roads with sharp turns from our hotel in a rental car, we almost got stuck in the very narrow alley leading to the restaurant in the dark, quiet, practically deserted town on this Tuesday evening. We found the hard way that apparently the only way to reach it was to park in the public lot a short distance downhill and hike up. Notwithstanding the scary experience, we were glad we made it to this charming little restaurant safely for early dinner, however. The interior with 7-8 tables was cheerful, and tastefully decorated. We appreciated the artful, eye-pleasing and meticulous presentation of the dishes, and the privacy of our table. The hostess was attentive and gracious. We were impressed by the cleverly plated vegetables that playfully resembled colorful âsushiâsâ and a refreshing iceberg lettuce salad served in elegant chinaware. The bolognese pasta was well-seasoned and tasty; the cod was moist and delicious; and the sliced beef was tender. We loved the Rose from a neighborhood vineyard. The sweet desserts rounded out an enjoyable meal. We got to admire the lit tall church tower in the town square nearby before heading back.

Wish we had found this earlier during our stay. Anything we saw on the various tables and our own choice was tasty and very well made. The cold cuts are great, Lasagne perfect, Tiramisu as well. Even simple Bruschetta with Tartufo was a new experience. Recommended. Nice decoration under the roof.

Daily home made pasta, hot soups, Braised, roasted and grilled meat. Simply tuscan, simply genuine, Tuscan pastfood.
The food and service were exceptional due to local ingredients cooked to perfection. The service was outstanding with every dish fully explained. We had a wonderful wine suggested to us and it was the right choice. The views are stunning and the restaurant very comfortable. What a glorious experience for my birthday and honeymoon celebration. The past was fresh and had so many choices in preparation. The beef main course was full of flavour. We loved it. Thank you so much

The small dining room has a real Food Trough for cattle dating back probably 200 years at least which is where the resturant get's it's provocative name "la Mangiatoia" but that is the only special feature a visitor finds here. The service is basic to say the least with no proper menu nor detailed explanation by the man of the house who doubles as the waiter. We asked from three typical antipasti and he decided that he'd bring one platter for all three which would have been fine had the content not been reduced to micro-portions. We had allowed him to convince us that we should order "la grande grilliata" which turned out, like the antipasta, to be anything but "grande". This time he brough each of us our serving of one very small pork chop, one small and fatty spare-rib and one sausage on a personal plate for each. That was it! Nothing "grande" about that at all nor was the meat of good quality. only one of us was couragous enough to order a deesert after that and I'm told it was very ordinary. The worst part was when we had to pay which compared to other restuarants we've visited in the general area, at least 40% over the top.
