This is one of the better restaurants in the Rioja wine region and has a reputation for that even though there is no particular reason to visit Casalareina among quite a few not particularly charming surrounding towns. Wine tourism is the main attractive but a few have from good to outstanding restaurants. La Vieja Bodega is well known for its traditional Riojan food and we enjoyed that. The tomatoes with olive oil and basil were flavorful but the menestra was a little overcooked. On the other hand, the pig trotters were prepared to perfection. The popular ham croquettes were very good but not among the best we have eaten elsewhere. The berries desert was good and light for an after meal and the wine list good with offers in half bottles which we enjoy if needing to drive afterwards. The Sierra Cantabria red was very good and the price adequate. The food prices are moderate and the service a little rough perhaps appropriate for a large lumbering , clean, place as its name indicates. Parking was free.

We booked online for lunch is open for dinner on weekend evenings! The Chef is related to the owners of Hotel Villa Sonsierra. I had an amazing local goat cheese salad which was light and fruity with a piquant dressing! This was followed by a slow cooked lamb very well executed! My partner enjoyed prawn and truffle carpaccio followed by Quail main course. The Hazelnut sponge and caramel ice cream and sauce was to die for!

We both had Menu del dia. I had red bean, bacon and chorizo stew to start. It was delicious and a meal in itself. My wife had potatoe and chorizo. Again lovely, because I ate some of this too. Second I had steak and chips. Again, tasty. I had one of my wife's lamb chops which were very good. Flan, or better known to us as creme caramel, for afters. We also had a bottle of house Rioja. The bill was â¬24 and I can honestly say that I would eat there tomorrow if I was staying. Lovely attentive and friendly staff too. It was really nice sitting in the sun enjoying a lovely meal here.

We arrived early for a lunch so sat out the back with a small beer until they started to serve. We don't smoke but it is a pleasant walled space where one could if that was wanted. The lady who has the grandchildren after which the restaurant is named, was so friendly and brought us a homemade tapa of tripe, which my husband loved and tucked into. Her son Paco speaks a little English and could translate the menu for us. It is no longer 11 euros for a 3 course lunch with wine, increased slightly. The wine is good for a house wine and I wasn't expecting anything expensive with a menu meal (unlike some other reviewers, who seemed to think it should be top notch as you're in Rioja. In fact, Paco let us buy a box of it from his store as the bodega opposite wasn't open). Our lunch was filling, tasty and home-cooked. There is an open fire for barbecue. The room is too large for cosy but it's clean and I would recommend a meal there. It was our second visit (and my second fair review) so we must've liked it to return!Thank you very much for your opinion. We were very happy for your return. We will continue to work to maintain this level , trying to inprove each day. We wait for you next year. Greetings from the whole Los Nietos team.

It s not only eating there but visiting the place that makes it worth a visit. We had the menu for 33⬠each and it was excellent and very complete (does not include wine or drinks) with 4 different courses. We had booked from our hotel but it was not full at night, although we were told it s better to book for midday, when it s more popular. Ask your waiter to take you around for a visit to the cellar downstairs and to the lounge upstairs for a nice surprise!

we were wine tasting in the area and someone recommended Vega for lunch. so glad we stopped in! other reviews were right, no english spoken but not needed. with a bit of google translate and basic words like tinto and blanca we all got by. the wine was young but still plenty fruity and great with the lunch. the food was good and wholesome. artichokes with Jamon, warm salad with sea food and something that looks like noodles on top but had a bit of a crunch. lamb stew...really good and also his recommendation (recommendar... another good word to know) stuffed pepper that were so lightly breaded with egg, so tender and delicious and yum sauce inside maybe mushroom. dessert was a very nice flan and a bit sweet rice pudding. all good!
