Very good food, and exceptional, helpful service. We had couverts, Veal in cream sauce, and Sea Bass. Both meals were well cooked, and generous portions. Good value for money too! We had a local speciality for desert, the name escapes me, but it was a meringue top on a walnut cake. Will definitely return, the young lady that served us was so helpful !!

Restaurante Brazao

The restaurant Brazao was founded in 1976 in an centenary building that bares a coat of arms (or Brazao), in the beautiful river side city of Alcacer do Sal, in Alentejo. Brazao is a family restaurant that provides high quality traditional food, with a wa

Walked past this restaurant at about 5pm, and took a look in as the door was open. Lady approached us from outside and advised that she opened at 6.30pm. We looked at the menu, and decided to go.Arrived at 6.40, doors open, only to be told 7pm, not open yet! Not a big deal, we popped off and got a drink, then returned.Service was very slow, and very inattentive as we were the only people in the restaurant! We waited at least 20 minutes for someone to take our order! Both chose Black Pork, which was OK, but fries with it were almost cold, and served on a cold platter! Salad was nice, but overall we left disappointed, and will not be back.

O Ninho

We were touring Pousadas which generally have good restaurants, but the arrival of a full coachload of SAGA folk sent us scuttling into town. With guidance from Trip advisor we found O Ninho but almost kept going as it is not impressive. However once inside, the number of locals confirmed it should be good and it proved to be one of our best meals in Portugal. Fabulous fresh salads, real home made soups, a mountain of steak and perfectly cooked potatoes with local wine. Senior Ninho only has about 10 words of English, but is very friendly and patient with our zero speaky Portugese. Excellent monster meal with good wine for 4 people - only 70 Euros!

This place looks very nice, has a good bar and seafood counter. They were full because it was Mother’s Day when we visited so were unable to sample the food. Will be interested to hear other reviews before our next visit.

We came here late in the day so missed the views .Restaurant has pleasant atmosphere, with good service. Entradas were excellent - the cheese with oregano deserves a special mention - wonderful choice of olive oil - subtle and not overwhelming. Sadly all let down by the bread not being as fresh as it could be.Pork tenderloin steaks were excellent as was the clam broth, the lamb was a little dry and over salted.Sublime chocolate mousse cake and local speciality made from egg yolks, sugar and pine nuts rounded off a good meal.Good food supported by reasonable wine list.

We've arrived at 15.00 and the place refused to sit us giving the excuse that the kitchen is closing. But they did agree to serve people which were next to us at the reception just because they arrived before us. I consider it highly unprofessional to make this kind of selective service.

We stopped at Alcacer for lunch on our way, looked for a typical place to eat and this one appealed. It’s quite small but very clean and has a good array of choice with both meat and fish dishes including some typical dishes like bacalhau. Nice service too.

Taberna 2 a Esquina

Can’t say enough good things about this place. It’s a little local taberna, and although highly rated on TripAdvisor, it maintains its “off the beaten path” kind of feel with loads of locals (we were the only tourists at the time). Service was amazing; from the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly by all, and the gentleman who managed the place (can’t remember his name now!) spoke fluent English and explained to us the different foods on offer for the day (everything is made fresh so there isn’t really a menu per se - he writes it out on a piece of paper based on whatever ingredients they have that day). Guaranteed to be fresh and delicious - we had grilled octopus salad with honey and vinegar, oxtail stew, baked Portuguese bread pudding (savory), chicken cooked in blood (way more delicious than it sounds), and pork cheek. All followed by a liter of homemade wine (over 15% - how you can tell a good wine from a not so good one apparently). It was all to die for, and definitely the highlight of our trip to Portugal! To top it all off, completely affordable... it set the bar very high for the rest of our trip!!

Interestingly, this restaurant was recommended by our hotel (despite hotel having its own fine dining restaurant)This family run restaurant was welcoming and very helpful despite the obvious language issue.. really our issue as we spoke zero portuguese but despite the barrier - we worked it out and the food was plentiful and very good..Our young waiter was great but very focused on the football on big TV but it was hard to be concerned as it seems everyone in Portugal is football focused at any time. The food was very inexpensive and very homey - would recommend it to get away from the hotel styled foods and the high costs within the more up market establishments

SALINAS Restaurante e Tapas

Went here based on TripAdvisor recommendations. It is a bit further walk from Pousada, but worth it. At 7.15 we were the first diners, but by 8.30 it was nearly full - clearly very popular with locals and regulars. It has a cost family feel and the waiter spoke good English, which helped to understand the menu. We chose calamari and mushroom starters, which arrived promptly and were large portions. One would probably have been enough for the two of us. The sauces were excellent. We were advised to share one main course of the “Secret Black Pork”, which was good advice, as the portion size was huge. A lot of excellent meat, with the traditional Migas - a mixture of breadcrumbs, herbs and other ingredients, plus a bowl of locally made crisps. We would have liked some green vegetables, but that would not appear to be the local custom. The meal was accompanied by an excellent local red wine. Fantastic value for money.
