Friends of NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory Hawaii Authority) is a nonprofit organization providing education and outreach in support of sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.
We visited the Kanaloa Octopus Farm at NELHA, and really enjoyed learning that work is being done to maintain populations of sea creatures, and to research how we can better live in harmony with the fascinating ocean environment.

Part of the University of Hawaii, the Lyon Arboretum offers 194 acres and a research facility.
Its beautiful but gets wet on the uneven trail. Lots of trees you won't see anywhere else, also beautiful flowers and orchids.

This is a nice aquarium. The staff are very knowledgeable. We had a great day here. There is a playground for the little ones and a restaurant, which was pretty good.

We were blown away by this place. It's hard finding activities to please a 12-yr-old AND a 4-yr-old, but this one did it. Yes, it's primarily marketed towards younger kids (probably 8 and under), but my stepson still had a blast messing around with his Dad in a bunch of the exhibits. My younger child was completely overwhelmed, in a good way! This was so much more than I expected. The small world area was outstanding, with a functioning vets, supermarket, firestation, police station, doctor's office, etc. So much opportunity for really engaging with the props. The little cinema was great as well--completely controlled by kids from the costumes and props to the sound effects and lighting. My daughter was bowled over by the mock-airplane, complete with costumes and an opportunity to 'fly' the plane in the cockpit. Upstairs there was another small world environment but this time it was sectioned by country, with realistic traditional play food from each country and a bit about the different ways of living. It was SO WELL DONE. I honestly can't praise this place enough, we would go again and again if we could. Not enough time or mental energy to do it all in one day!!
