Whilst staying with friends we were taken to De Oude Haven Mosselrestaurant. This restaurant is situated in the middle of the town called Philippines. Whilst Philippines is a small town it is full of seafood and fish restaurants. Their speciality is mussels. We entered the restaurant, which was packed with customers and greeted by the owner, who showed us to a table. The drinks list and the food menu is extensive. I had prawns for my starter course and mussels for my main. The prawns were delicious as too were the mussels. The mussels when they arrived are astonishing. All four of us had the same, and the mussels came to us in batches for two people. The bowl that they arrived in was absolutely enormous. There were so many to eat. They were delicious. The staff were attentive, efficient and friendly. A perfect restaurant in which to have a delicious meal. Highly recommended. A note: all of our clothes smelt of mussels the next morning.

This place is a classic fish and mussel restaurant. It serves perfect seafood, with shellfish at its best. We loved the oysters and the house speciality mussels (moules) are a real treat! The owner and staff are really friendly and make you feel at home. Worth a visit! And so is the region.

Last week I was in Sas van Gent for a one-night layover. Looking for a place to have dinner I walked past de Gastronoom which displayed a menu outside which gave a reasonably priced selection of items. The service was very friendly and fast. We ordered just a main course: a fish stew for my companion and a veal steak for me. Both were excellent. After that we enjoyed a copious dessert of different ice creams with a chocolate and caramel sauce on top. Very good as well. This all was accompanied by a carafe of rosé wine. This was an unexpected nice experience in this small city close to the Belgian border, which also is the reason the food had a Flemish character. Do not let the look of the place ( a bit like a cafetaria) mislead you, the food is good!

De Baekermat in Westdorpe is a great stopping location for anyone on route between Ghent and the southern Netherlands. Located in the first village inside the Dutch border, De Baekermat provides masses of stylish indoor and outdoor space where you can sample fine food and local produce. It has a range of home made food, including imaginative vegetarian dishes. The restaurant attracts everyone from families celebrating formal occasions, couples, kids, bicycle enthusiasts, and is very dog friendly. The staff speak impeccable English - which is not always the case in this more rural part of the Netherlands. After you have eaten you can shop for regional cheeses in the farm shop and be back on the route to Terneuzen or Ghent in under a minute. A great find!
This restaurant has great service. You can have an excellent daily special or go for one of the nice dishes on the menu. Everything is prepared with fresh, pure ingredients and presented nicely on your plate. A great place for honest Belgian cuisine. The service is swift and respectful with a nice touch of flair and humour. The interior is perfect for both a business as a private lunch or dinner.

We did the wine-dine-sleep formula with friends. Price for the whole programme, including a 5 course dinner with carefully selected superb wines, followed by spending the night in a large and comfortable hotelroom and a good breakfast for 129 euro per person, which is a bargain, seen the quality of the food and the services. We do this once or twice a year since a couple of years now, and are never dissapointed.
