Top 10 Day Trips from in Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago

December 8, 2021 Rebbecca Marino

Former palaces and Arab mansions along the twisting streets of Stone Town hint at a grander age for this port city on the western coast of Zanzibar. The Old Fort, built in the 1700s to fend off the Portuguese, now hosts local performances, a café and an art gallery. Overstuffed bazaars lend an air of nonstop bustle. Mafia Island Marine Park sits just offshore, a haven for snorkeling the local reefs. Day tours visit working plantations where the island's legendary spices are grown.

Driver was not present at airport upon our arrival. I waited 15 minutes before calling the business phone, driver answered and told me he was not coming. He said the company never informed him of a pickup that day. I booked this private transfer to avoid dealing with random taxis at 3am, but that’s exactly what I was forced to do. Please do not book with company.

From start to finish this was an awesome experience beginning with excellent communications to spotting a cheetah and a black rhino. Everyone I dealt with regarding this tour was delightful including Jimmy, Mashaka, Jim's and Paul. A definite recommend for Paradise Tours.

Booked via Expedia and the company couldn't of been more professional, prior to the tour they contacted me to arrange a pick up from my hotel to take me to the boat. The tour it's self was very enjoyable and the staff couldn't of been anymore friendly and informative. I would definitely recommend using them, especially when your trying to arrange tours prior to your arrival.

We paid 200 dollars for what we were told was a private tour of the forest. We had 10 people with us on our tour and at one point had to share the private taxi booked at the tour guides insistence. As the others in the tour included young bored children the tour raced through in about 30 minutes. The forest is beautiful and well worth a visit but do not go with this operator.

We were lucky to meet Mody at Stone Town. He organized for us a real adventure to the Mikumi Park, where we met all the animals very close! It was unbelievable! Moreover he guided us to the local village near the park (it was our spontaneous request for more deep experience). The life and people there is very different - it is a real Africa. By chance we became guests at local wedding - the experience you can’t even imagine! Everything was great. I strongly recommend Mody as a guide for real adventurers, who not only want a nice picture, but an authentic Africa experience.
