Shan State (Burmese: ရှမ်းပြည်နယ်, pronounced [ʃáɴ pjìnɛ̀]; Shan: မိူင်းတႆး [mə́ŋ.táj]) is a state of Myanmar. Shan State borders China to the north, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the south, and five administrative divisions of Burma in the west. Largest of the 14 administrative divisions by land area, Shan State covers 155,800 km², almost a quarter of the total area of Burma. The state gets its name from the Shan people, one of several ethnic groups that inhabit the area. Shan State is largely rural, with only three cities of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung, and the capital, Taunggyi. Taunggyi is 150.7 km north east of the nation's capital Naypyitaw.

Surrounded by Pa-O village and arranged neatly in straight rows, the 2000-plus stupas at Kakku are one of the most impressive, yet least visited sites in Shan State. Cannot praise Adventure Myanmar tours enough for their excellent service. From their guides, drivers, help with check ins at airports we were taken care of wonderfully. We flew from Yangon to Inle lake, Mandalay and Bagan and back to Yangon Nothing was too much trouble for them and everything was so well organised. Our trip was stress free and we received so many presents too as well as a lovely meal paid for by them on our last night in Myanmar. We were so touched by all the presents and the meal, which other tour company does that?

I travelled in a Group of 14 people (including 5 under 10 kids) in Thailand in Genuary. The time we spent in the Chang Mai was an absolute highlight and big parto of it was due to the excellent Guide Narong and the Green Trail Organizations: the excursions were various, very well organized and all defenetly worth. Elephants, kayaking, Palong Villave were my personal top picks. But again, the wise and knolegable wave of Narong was inspiring and made the difference! I defenetly recomend the Organization and Narong in particular. Hope to go back to those beautiful land!

With hidden charms and much to explore including temples, monasteries and markets, as well as great street food and panoramic views from Mandalay Hill this is a city well worth spending time in.’
