We did the Platypus Walk with 2 kids (aged 4 and 1) and its a very easy walk to do with kids this age. Don't be afraid of the drop on the dam wall - it looks worse than what it actually is. Can easily take a pram/pushchair on this walk with no issue at all. Beautiful walk in a well maintained park - I just wish we were able to spot a platypus but more of a reason to come back!

We met up with family for a BBQ at Cataract Dam. The BBQs are always well maintained as are the shelters. There is a good playground for the kids as well as plenty of room for them to run around. The local birdlife is very friendly and will swarm if you decide to feed them.

Extremely laid out viewing area and plenty of parking. Bit of a way in from the Wauchope Road but well worth the detour. Impressed by the peacefulness and quiet of the viewing area plus the cleanliness of the area. Plenty of information on the construction of the Dam plus the requirement for the Dam. Three great individual BBQs overlooking the Dam make this a great place to spend a few quiet hours with nature.

Built between 1896 and 1898 the dam provided Armidale's water until the 1968, when Malpas Dam was completed. Now a stunningly beautiful place to spend a few hours - bring a boat and have a paddle, throw in a line or just take a walk around the perimeter - an easy-going stroll that takes 20 minutes or so. Lots of bird-life and wildlife to see (watch out for snakes) or just sit on the grassy edges, use the barbecues and sheltered eating area, or kick a ball on the large grassed open area. It really is a beautiful part of the countryside outside the main town and a lovely scenic drive to get there. Well worth going.

We went out to have a look at Carcoar Dam. It is such a pretty spot. There were a few people camped there. There are amenities with cold showers and there is a tank for drinking water. We stopped and read about the power generating wind turbines which was very interesting. We also drove up and had a look at the dam itself. There is also a launching ramp for boating or putting in a kayak. The dam isn’t very large do a kayak would be good. We put the foot in the memory banks if we pass by again and want a quiet place to stay off the highway.
