Top 10 Cultural Tours in Rotterdam, South Holland Province

April 29, 2022 Terina Blouin

Holland's most modern city began as a fishing village in the 13th century. It was developing into an industrial and trading power when German bombers destroyed the city center and harbor in 1940. However, Rotterdam's unique architecture now brings many visitors to bike around this urbane, cosmopolitan city. Old Dutch-style houses can still be found in historic Delfshaven, from where the pilgrims set sail in 1620. Cultural offerings from summer's carnival to classical music give Amsterdam competition.

5 of 5. Our tour guide Izzy was very good about communicating with us (via text message) before we disembarked from our ship. We easily met up with him after our cab ride to the train station. Izzy provided us with a personal tour of HIS town. Among other places, he took us to his favorite coffee shop, showed us where his mother worked and took us to the downtown market, the cube houses, on the subway and various other interesting places. He bought us coffee and cookies and offered to buy us meals. We felt like we got to see the city with someone who is very proud of the city. He was knowledgeable and kept checking with us to see if we were "OK" and what we'd like to see.

A wonder of the modern world according to engineers, the Delta Works – or Deltawerken in Dutch – is a series of dams, sluices, levees, dikes and a storm-surge barrier designed to protect the Netherlands from rising storm water. Following the deadly North Sea Flood in 1953, the Delta Works Commission was launched to find a solution to the danger of rising sea levels. Despite research and planning beginning in the 1950s, the 13 parts of the Delta Works in the province of Zeeland took around 50 years to finish.
